Double Champions In Women's Division History
THIS POST WAS PRE WRITTEN
A couple of weeks back we witnessed Sasha Banks became the
latest double champion in the WWE when she became the new RAW Women’s champ,
defeating Asuka. As the current women’s tag team champion Banks has joined Bayley
on her power trip and the two superstars sit at the very top of their division
with all the gold. Now, Banks is not the only female superstar to hold more
than one championship at the same time during her WWE run and today we are
going to be looking at every woman who stood as a double champion at some point
during their WWE careers.
Paige
In two thousand and thirteen, Paige made history as the first
NXT Women’s champion defeating Emma in a match that played a huge part in the women’s
evolution right at the very start. Her reign is to this day one of the most
iconic of the title’s history and these moments as NXT Women’s champ are still
some of Paige’s overall WWE highlights. In two thousand and fourteen at only
twenty-one, Paige made her first appearance on Monday night RAW confronting AJ Lee
the night after Wrestlemania and was presented with a divas championship match
live in front of the biggest audience the British star had ever competed in
front of. While Lee dominated the majority of the match up Paige was able to capitalize
on the perfect moment, hitting her finisher and become the new Divas champion
again making history as the youngest woman to old the title. At the time Paige
was still the NXT Women’s champion and a week later was forced to relinquish
the NXT women’s title as she moved up to the main roster.
Becky Lynch
One of the biggest moments in the history of the women’s division takes place at Wrestlemania 35 when Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair and
Ronda Rousey made history competing in the first ever women’s Wrestlemania
main event with the end result promising to see a double champion. The build to
this match had done major things for the division but a true star was born in
the form of Becky Lynch who had won over the hearts of fans and became the new
face of the WWE. Now, the closing moments of this bout were messy and
controversial to say the least but nothing can take away from the fact that
Becky Lynch became the RAW and Smackdown women’s champion and the reign of
Becky two belts began. With a catchy ring to it and a decent reign of both
titles (especially the RAW Women’s championship, holding it for over a year)
Lynch climbed to the top of the ladder and showed how holding two titles is
really done.
Michelle McCool
Michelle McCool is without a doubt a future Hall of Famer
and throughout her WWE career had several historic and standout moments with
one of the biggest being her victory at night of champion back in 2009. Going
up against divas champion, Melina, the pair went one on one in a winner takes
all match up. This contest highlighted how important time and an opportunity was
for the diva's division and as two of the most decorated female athletes on the
roster this made for an entertaining must see that had more depth and interest
than most women’s division matches at the time. This was a competitive contest
that truly could have gone either way but in the end, it was McCool who walked
out the divas and women’s champion, unifying the titles and again making
history in her WWE career. This was a key moment during the diva era and an
underrated match of its time.
Sasha Banks
Up next, we have the woman who inspired this post, Sasha
Banks. After winning the women’s tag team titles on an episode of Smackdown
LIVE Banks and Bayley began to make their way to the top of the women’s
division and more depth was added to their story and characters. We saw Banks
given a shot at the Smackdown women’s title at Wrestlemania but managed to come
up short and so her attention was soon moved to the RAW Women’s championship
and of course, Asuka. Colliding at the Extreme Rules PPV last month. A
controversial ending saw Banks leave with the title but not quite the true
champion and so a rematch was scheduled for an episode of RAW the following
week. In another instant classic, Asuka and Sasha worked an epic match up sure
to go down as a highlight of the year and both women’s careers but also worked
as yet another historic moment for Banks who became the new RAW women’s
champion as well as one half of the women’s tag team champions. This may not be
a decision I personally am the biggest fan of however, it has an interesting
element and the reign alongside the power trip the Golden Role Models are on
makes for entertaining content!
Bayley
And finally, we have the current Smackdown women’s champion
Bayley. Now, I will be the first to admit that I have not been the fan of this
historic reign from Bayley. Since her heel turn Bayley’s character work has
been stale, boring, forced and struggled to connect with fans despite the highlight
moments throughout it. A couple months back Bayley also captured the tag team
championships alongside Sasha Banks and since then the pair have dominated the
women’s division across the WWE main roster. Bayley’s Smackdown women’s
championship reign is the longest of its history and she and Banks have been
adding a lot of personality and interest to the women’s tag team scene since defeating
Bliss and Cross for the titles. Bayley may not be a personal favourite of mine
but the grand slam champion has taken control of the blue brand and taking part
in vital moments and matches on RAW also.
The WWE have been going double champion crazy throughout
2020 with Sasha Banks the latest to join the line. The idea of a double
champion is something that divides fans and can either be a brilliant concept or
a big mistake! Sasha and Bayley are currently dominating the women’s division
but what do their reigns mean for the future?
