The Best Kay Lee Ray Matches As NXT UK Women's Champion
Vs. Toni Storm (“I quit match)
One of the most underrated women’s matches has most certainly
got to be Kay Lee Ray vs Toni Storm during an episode of NXT UK where the pair collided
for the final time in an I quit Match. This is not a stipulation we see used in
the women’s division all too much at all and in general to be fair. It’s a match style that caters to Ray’s persona and in-ring style perfectly for her history
in the hardcore competition was sure to come to light here. Colliding with Storm
yet again meant that the two clearly knew each other very well after meeting
several times prior in other fantastic matchups but it also meant that the
pair needed to provide something different to what we have seen from them
before and that is exactly what we got. Ray was able to showcase her sadistic
attitude and her history in matches with a more hardcore style was evident
throughout. We got plenty of character work and emotion from both women and the
end result was so fitting and different from what we ever really see, and I loved
that! There was great emphasis on how dangerous the champion is and we had
great character development with how the ending was booked alone.
Vs. Tegan Nox
Personally, I have always felt as though Tegan Nox should
have gone on to become NXT UK women’s champion, but there can be no denying she
is a fitting member of the black and gold brand over in the US. With that in
mind, Nox has competed for the NXT UK women’s championship going one on one
with Kay Lee Ray in what was genuinely a strong matchup between two standout
female performers. Both are so popular amongst the British Wrestling scene and
have been a huge part of shining a light on female wrestling in the UK and so
in all honesty they deserved to main event this episode as they did. This was
another emotional performance that had fans genuinely pulling for Nox after the
journey she had been on over the years. The bout took Ray away from her more
hardcore style and focused in on her wrestling ability making this a simple but
entertaining match that had a bit of everything. It remains one of Nox’s best singles
performances since joining the WWE and a clear example of Ray’s wrestling
ability.
War Games 2019
In two thousand and nineteen, the WWE made history again when
women competed inside War Games for the first time and a surprise superstar
taking part was NXT UK Women’s champion, Kay Lee Ray. The match was so fitting to
Ray’s style and while I was left a little disappointed with what we saw from
her and the fact we didn’t get to see the best of Ray and what could have been
this was such a big deal and important booking step during her reign. It gave
her the spotlight she deserved and moment to perform in front of a bigger audience
which again was great to see and much deserved. It was an important step in
shining a light on the NXT UK brand and particularly Ray and the women’s
division there. Things could have been better here, but it was an incredibly
important booking decision in her career and title reign.
Vs Dakota Kai
On the road to War Games fans saw a lot of Kay Lee Ray on
NXT including assisting important victories to gain the upper hand for the Live
special as well as a fantastic one on one against Dakota Kai. This was a hard-hitting
contest against two women who are not afraid to take a risk and get those stiff
hard strikes in. This remains one of my favourite singles matches from Kai and while
this bout didn’t give us plenty of character work it was a simple entertaining
match up that genuinely has been a standout of Ray’s title reign despite the
championship not being up for grabs here.
Vs Toni Storm vs Piper Niven
Possibly my favourite match up from Kay Lee Ray since
becoming champion is the triple threat including Piper Niven and Toni Storm.
There was so much history between all three women and that was so evident and
played such a big part in the build and story to this match. It was also so perfectly
clear how much winning and walking out as champion meant to each woman competing.
There was a blend of all three styles and the women were given a great deal of
time to work a solid standout match up for the Takeover event. The crowd was
invested which can have such an impact and make a big difference in how good
the match is and comes across. This was the night Ray proved exactly why she is
champion and what she would be bringing to the table as champion. This was a fun
entertaining bout that gave us a clear idea of what each these women are about
and the potential the NXT UK women’s division has once they are given the time.
Unfortunately, because of the lack of attention and draw NXT
UK receives a lot of these matches have been forgotten or gone unseen but I
advise that you definitely check out all these matches above and the work of
Kay Lee Ray prior to joining the WWE for she really is bringing something very
different to the women’s division and has been apart of so many entertaining
and strong wrestling matchups.
