AEW Revolution Honest Review
Last night Wrestling fans sat back enjoyed AEW’s Revolution
PPV and with a stacked card involving must-see title matches, sure entertaining
collisions, and encounters between stars with an incredible story this was PPV
event you did not want to miss out on! The night provided wrestling fans with a
bit of everything including early match of the year contenders and added
development to current storylines but just what were the best moments of the
evening? What left fans surprised? What disappointed and did Revolution live up
to the build, hype, and expectations?
“I’m here to Fight Jericho’s Bitch”
The opening contest wasn’t my personal favourite nor a
highlight match of the evening but it was a well-booked contest with a solid
build. Dustin is a great talent to open a show with hiks experience and
popularity amongst fans sure to draw in audiences. This, of course, was the most
we have seen from Hager in the ring since he arrived in AEW and so this was an
important matchup for the Muscle of the Inner Circle. Having Jacks' wife in the
audience was a great touch and added something different to the bout away from
the Inner Circle and gave Hager something else to add to his character. Now,
the match itself was decent but on a card where the competition was so high, it
was easy to forget. It was a slower-paced match that focused on the strength and
power of Jack and the experience factor of Dustin. I’m not entirely sure how I
feel about a babyface kissing the wife of another man without her consent but,
we can look past that right? I’m glad the two were given a good amount of time
to compete, a short encounter would have been disappointing and negatively affected
both men and here we got more of a story being told. The end result was very important
with this opening match up and Jack picking up the win here was without a doubt
the right booking decision. He really needed this win and Dustin won’t be
affected by this loss.
The Future Collides
There was a lot going on here before this match between
Sammy Gauvera and Darby Allin even began! With the two unable to wait for the
bell to ring the young stars came to blows at ringside with devastating table
spots and a dive that legit almost killed Darby! The action before the match
really had everyone invested and completely hooked. Both men are so young and
the future of pro wrestling/AEW and their encounter made for a completely
different vibe from the match prior. This was another personal collision that focused
more so on each talent trying to one-up the other and cause serious harm. There
were some great spots throughout and I loved how unpredictable this bout was
when it came to the end result, it really could have gone either way. We saw an
excellent showing from both these young stars and it was nice to see more of
Darby's wrestling ability away from Hardcore competition and I believe this was arguably
Sammy’s best performance in AEW to date! Gauvra and Allin were so evenly
matched here which again made this such a fun watch and Darby’s win was well received!
A slightly shorter match but we got everything we could have asked for here.
How Do You Game plan a team that Knows your Game?
When it came to tag team competition at Revolution it was
the Collision between the Elite, we all wanted to see! With the Young Bucks
taking on Kenny Omega and Hangman Adam Paige this made for an interesting must-see between two teams who really do know each other so incredibly well! The
expectations were so high when it came to this bout and with so much backstory
and tension, this was a key match of the evening you didn’t want to miss out on.
There was an aggression from the Young Bucks that switched up the vibe here and
the tensions between Omega and Hangman also added to the intensity. The
wrestling here was as good as we could have expected. All four men in this
match are such incredible athletes and performers and together they created a big-time
tag team bout that stood out on a stacked card. There was an excellent blend of
storytelling, intensity, fast-paced and slower-paced action and great tag teamwork
from both sides despite the tension. I love seeing tag team wrestling done so
well and this match had everything you could ask for from the wrestling to the
storytelling. What we got here was a lengthy bout with neither team willing to
give in and with so many close falls the unpredictability really did grow. With
so much back and forth action however we did eventually see a conclusion that involved
Omega and Hangman retaining the titles after a hard-fought battle and one of my
personal favourite matches of the evening.
Power Meets Power
Women’s division action next and we saw two huge powerhouses
collide in the form of Kris Stadtlander and champion Nyla Rose. Stadtlander made
for a completely different kind of opponent for Rose who is so used to being
the powerhouse of any bout she competes in but with both women being so evenly matched in terms of power this was an interesting bout that again, could have
gone either way. Kris does have more agility and makes for a different kind of
athlete which age her a slight advantage, but the confidence and sheer strength
of the champion is unlike any other. The
first few minutes of this match really did see both women showcase their power
and look to impress and one-up the other making it clear just how real and
intense the competition was here. I did find that the lack of energy and
investment from the live crowd did affect this match and feel of it and because
of that watching from home, I did initially struggle to really enjoy the action
on screen. The more this match went on however the more I found myself invested
in the action. We saw a great display of power from both women and Stadtlander
in particular really did stand out with her athleticism and character work. We
didn’t see a title change here which didn’t surprise me at all but I do think
that the mistake made with this one was the timing. These two women were always
sure to collide but I believe it came too soon in their careers and we should
have seen them come to blows further down the line.
The Most Personal Encounter of the Evening
There can be no denying that MJF vs Cody Rhodes was the most
personal match up of the evening. This has the best build of all the bouts of
the evening and the strongest story behind it. Fans have been waiting months
for these two stars to collide and I have to admit I was very interested in
this one! (Now I must briefly mention how much I loved Cody’s entrance). From
the get-go, we could really see how well these two know each other. Both men
knew what the other had planned and how to counter exactly what was coming next
which played in so well with the story being told and the build. Because of
their history together there was amazing chemistry between MJF and Rhodes which
also played such a huge role in this match and added to the vibe and energy. It
took a while before we really saw that explosive action and for the match to
really get going and reach a higher level but once it did this match brought
something completely different to the evening to every other match we saw
during the night. There was great character work on both sides with MJF, in particular, played his role as one of the best heels in the business today
perfectly as always. Now, when it came to the end result this was by far the most
surprising of the evening. Using the dynamite diamond ring to his advantage MJF
picked up the massively shocking victory and after what was an intense battle
fans were left speechless! How do I feel about this end result? Honestly, I’m
not mad. I liked that we saw something so different towards the end that fitted
so well with the story we have seen being told over the past month or so. The
closing moments were also done so incredibly well!
Freshly Squeezed Debut
Revolution saw the first singles performance from Orange
Cassidey in AEW and going up against the bastard PAC it wasn’t going to be an
easy ride for the freshly squeezed Orange Cassidy. Now, this was just fun to
watch. I wasn’t expecting anything major here, but I was entertained, to say the
least! Both men are so different and so exciting to watch for completely
opposite reasons and the crowd, of course, loved what was being shown here. Now,
this was the most predictable match of the evening but the energy in the arena
during this was just fantastic and that hope we all had that we could see a
surprise victory for Cassidy made for something pretty special. The arrival of
the Lucha Brothers was a smart move and created a strong opening for closing
moments to take place that would see PAC pick up the win.
Your Main Event of the Evening
As arguably the two biggest, most talked about, popular
stars in AEW Chris Jericho vs Jon Moxley made for the perfect main event we
were all excited for. Their collision in AEW has always been inevitable and
with gold on the line and such an even build this could have gone either way
and the unpredictability factor that ran throughout the evening was clear once
again. There’s great chemistry between the two men, the energy in the arena was
amazing from the get-go here and the similarities in their characters just gave
this match so much more depth and intensity. The referee unsurprisingly let a
lot slip here in this main event really allowing challenger and champion to
push the boundaries and punish one another. This match stood out early for the
amount of character work and intensity from the moment the bell rang. Both men
set out to beat the s h I t out of each other and while this wasn’t a technical
pure wrestling match this was a personal fight that has everyone hooked and
entertained. The longer the match went on the more desperate we saw the
champion grow including using his Inner Circle buddies and trying to get
himself disqualified but the fight of the challenger was strong and Aubrey did
a fantastic job as ref. The closing moments really made for something special
with Moxley revealing his eye had in fact healed perfectly and after pinning
Jericho we saw a new AEW World champion crowned in big-time fan favourite, Jon
Moxley and I don’t know about you but I couldn’t be happier!
What I loved about the AEW Revolution PPV was the unpredictability
of most of the matches on the card. It was clear that the majority of bouts that
took place really could have gone either way and that played a huge role in my
personal overall interest in the PPV. I found that I was legit interested in
every match because I genuinely wasn’t sure which way it would go. Each match
brought something different to the night and contests like the opening match up
was smartly booked for the men involved and the surprise win for MJF was a key
part of the night. I felt the women’s division didn’t have the best showing of
the evening and this is an area AEW still need to work on but overall this was
a strong show. The night concluded with a new AEW World champion crowned and
after such an intense journey throughout his career it was a pretty emotional
moment to see Moxley crowned champion and cement himself at the very top of the
most talked-about wrestling promotion today and the words our new champ spoke
following his victory really did say it all. Congrats to Moxley, a very very
well deserved champ!
