Mid Card Superstars Who Could Challenge Drew McIntyre for WWE Championship
There can simply be no denying that Drew McIntyre has been one of the strongest and effective WWE champions in recent memory. A true fighting champion the Scottish star has worked several strong storylines against the likes of Randy Orton and Dolph Ziggler, defended and defeated top talents such as AJ Styles and even scored a victory over legend Goldberg at the recent Royal Rumble PPV. There has so far been so much that I have enjoyed about both WWE title reigns for McIntyre but his ability to make a storyline with a midcard talent feel like a big deal, entertain fans and work perfectly as a title bout is something incredibly special and in today’s blog post I am going to be listing a few more stars midcard talents I want to see challenge McIntyre for the most prestigious championship in the WWE.
Ricochet
The main roster treatment of former North American Champion,
Ricochet is something that still frustrates me on a near-weekly basis. A modern
talent with an incredible arsenal and athleticism like no other it's incredibly
frustrating to see him booked so poorly. However, I do believe that there is
time to turn things around or at least give Ricochet his moment to show that he
truly is an incredible talent who deserves a top spot. What I love about
McIntyre’s reign as champion is the hope it brings. While we have seen him work
big matches and storylines with major main event talent, he has also worked
with smaller mid card stars elevating them and giving them a spotlight. His
personal WWE journey/history means he can connect with the younger talent who are
just not getting the attention they deserve so whether it be Drew personally hand-picking
Ricochet as a challenger for his title or the former NXT talent approaching the
Scottish star for an opportunity a basic story can be told here that could give
Ricochet the spotlight he deserves and the opportunity we all want to see for
him. These are two hugely different kinds of superstars and unlike what we saw
during his clash with Lesnar we can at least expect a lengthy bout where his strengths
are shown.
Andrade
I do not know about you, but I am very much missing Andrade
on my screen. While he has not always been booked well on the main roster the
young star has incredible potential and we have seen some phenomenal matches
and performances from him, and I am hoping that upon a return we get to see the
best of Andrade or at least identical to what we saw during his time in NXT. Speaking
of NXT, these two superstars no stranger to one another, not only have they
clashed on RAW but worked longer matches over on the black and gold brand for
the NXT championship a few years back. Again, both men are quite different in ring
performers but manage to complement each other’s styles. A returning Andrade challenging
McIntyre would perfectly indicate the new path he is on and better days to come
putting him in a bigger and brighter spotlight and finally portraying/booking
him as a top talent. A cocky heel with a move set Andrade possesses makes for a
fresh opponent for McIntyre and while he is unlikely to walk away as the new
champion the rivalry and matches would most certainly be beneficial.
Mustafa
If you know me you know that I am not enjoying the work we
see from Retribution. While the idea had so much potential things just haven’t
gone the way many fans including myself predicted and expected, however, that
being said there is still hope that we could at least see a major storyline and
make the whole idea have some kind of purpose and positive outcome. Mustafa and
co have worked a great angle with Xavier Woods but I am hoping to see more here
and a clash with the WWE champion could make for something very special indeed.
Mustafa is a fantastic in-ring performer and its painful to see just how
underrated his wrestling goes. Working with a powerhouse like McIntyre could
really show off Mustafa’s strengths but also the depths of his move set and with
enough, in-ring time these two could really work a standout match that changes
the career of Mustafa. Now, what I really like about the idea of these two
colliding the storyline potential. Retribution have a chip on their shoulder,
they’re frustrated and believe they deserve more and better, Mustafa challenging
McIntyre just seems to make sense despite his mid-card status and I genuinely believe
we could see some awesome work here. Mustafa has the numbers on his side and is
a completely different kind of talent to what we have seen McIntyre defend his
title against making things even more interesting.
Jinder Mahal
Okay, so I know that so many of us would rather not be reminded
of Jinder Mahal’s WWE Championship reign and I know there are people who would
not want to see these two collide however, I am all for Jinder Mahal vs Drew
McIntyre and have been waiting to see them collide since McIntyre’s first
reign. There is a lot of history between these two men from their former on-screen
allegiance to their off-screen friendship, we have seen Mahal get to the top before
McIntyre, but we have seen Drew hold the top spot for far longer and as a
result here we have a very personal rivalry and a story that tells itself. It
would be great for these men to touch on their individual WWE journeys and the personal
element of their feud would almost match what we are currently seeing between Drew
and Sheamus.
Angel Garza
While we do not see much of him at the moment Angel Garza is
personally one of my favourite WWE superstars today. With an Eddie feel to him
he oozes potential and I truly do believe that great things are to come from
him. His character work has been strong from day one, his charisma is
incredible and what he can do in the ring is incredibly special indeed. I
believe that with time Garza is really going to make an impact, but I would
love to see him given a big push that puts eyes on him and sets him off on the
right track and challenging McIntyre not only in a one off, but a lengthy
storyline could be exactly what is needed. The two characters could not be any
more different from one another and working with a star like McIntyre and the
kind of personality he possesses could really bring out the best in Garza and
present fans with a very entertaining storyline with matches that are equally
as strong.
And those are some of the mid card names I would love to see
challenge Drew McIntyre for the WWE championship this year! Of course, I would
love to know what you guys think so if whether if you agree or disagree with my
picks let me know down in the comments below or tweet me over at @TezangiVictoria.
