Biggest Take Aways from SummerSlam 2020

This weekend the WWE gave us plenty to enjoy including last nights explosive SummerSlam PPV. Once again, the WWE universe sat back and witnessed title changes, must-see matchups, shocking moments and a conclusion that has left plenty of questions! In today’s blog post we are going to be looking at some of the best and worst moments of the SummerSlam PPV telling you what I really thought and what we the fans took away from one of the biggest PPV’s of the year!

Bayley vs Sasha Banks is COMING

The decision to book Asuka in both women’s championship matches last night really did divide fans and while I can see why it was frustrating this made for smart storytelling that has added depth to an angle fans have been waiting a very long time for! At the start of the evening Bayley was set to defend the Smackdown women’s title of course against Asuka and while the action was nothing truly standout it was one of the best title defences we have seen from Bayley’s reign and it highlighted just how good she is in the ring. Banks’ involvement did see Bayley retain the championship which is something that did not come as a surprise, however, later in the evening Bayley wasn’t quite as focused as the Boss and as a result, Banks lost her RAW Women’s championship t Asuka. Now, this is a booking decision I totally saw coming and had predicted the moment these matches were announced. The long-term storytelling the WWE are doing when it comes to Banks and Bayley is becoming more effective and the seeds have certainly been planted for their split. Banks is looking closer to snapping and with a tag team title defence at Payback next week it appears SummerSlam has been the perfect set up for the split of the Golden Role models.

Apollo Crews Could Have a Longer Title Reign than Expected

I’ll admit it… I did want to see MVP walk out of SummerSlam as the new United States champion. The idea of The Hurt Business is something I’m totally invested in and I truly want to see Benjamin, Lashley and of course MVP have success and be apart of something strong, let's face it, they more than deserve it! However, over on the kick-off show, the future Hall of Famer failed to walk out with the title on his shoulder and a win over Crews which has left many wondering if we may see a longer title reign from Apollo than expected. There is still the likelihood that it will be Lashley who dethrones the former NXT star (something I’m not the biggest fan of just yet) but in all honesty, Crews is looking good right now and this angle has seen some of his best WWE work to date. There are still so many awesome matches Crews could be apart of, do you want to see a longer reign for him?

Sonya Deville is a Future Champion

Anyone who follows me on twitter or was chatting to me last night during SummerSlam will know that I have been thirsting over Sonya Deville for weeks as fan shave seen the former Tough Enough star really come into her own! From character changes to looking like a sexy badass, Deville is shining bright right now and her storyline alongside Mandy Rose was without a doubt one of the best women’s division storylines we have seen in some time! Now, the match itself did, unfortunately, disappoint, however, we had some solid moments, the chemistry was evident, and this match clearly showed just how far both women have come in the past five years! Mandy came across very likeable and her wrestling was on point even if she does struggle awkwardly with a table! Deville of course, also had a strong showing bringing more character and showcasing the depths and intensity of her move set. Sonya’s loss does mean she will be out of action for a while (something we all expected considering the circumstances of her personal life) however, upon a return we can most certainly expect to see something incredibly special from her. The best is one hundred per cent still to come from Deville and with a potential move to RAW in the future as well as keeping in mind the incredible impact she has made recently there can be no denying we are looking at a future champion here.

Dominik Mysterio Has Something VERY Special

I will admit that I was not enjoying SummerSlam all too much until the Seth Rollins/Dominik Mysterio match where it felt as though things had turned around and I found myself more invested. The storytelling was strong throughout and we had some classic top babyface vs ultimate heelwork. Of course, fans did not know what to expect from Dominik but from start to finish what we saw was true heart and passion which made him extremely likeable and easy to root for. He appeared fast-paced, something that didn’t’ come as a surprise but we also saw the potential he possesses and with time it's clear he could have some awesome matches! Now, what made this so special was the little touches the WWE added to the encounter. From Seth’s ring gear (a replica of Rey’s Halloween Havoc attire) and Murphy’s role to Dominik’s mum making an appearance and the closing moments that saw Rey handcuffed to the ropes. This was wrestling entertainment at its finest and I found myself completely hooked. Dominik’s loss was not a surprise, but we can expect some exciting things from him in the future!

The Street Profits Will Have a Strong Month

The Street Profits have had an interesting reign so far full of highs and lows but its clear that the best is still yet to come, and we have not seen just how good these two can really be! SummerSlam saw Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins retain the RAW Tag team titles against Garza and Andrade and while the match was not a big standout exciting spots made this fun to watch and the height from Montez on that finisher is something very special! Over the past couple of days, the WWE have done a lot to put a spotlight on the Street Profits including an Instagram post the celebrated the fact they are the longest reigning raw tag team champs since the new draft era began as well as Owens sporting a their t shirt during the show last night. When we include Bianca’s recent involvement the Street Profits really are receiving some of their best work since joining the main roster and I’m hoping we can see them move onto more serious angles the showcase how damn good they really are!

The Fiend May Have Another Short Reign

I cannot express just how happy I was last night when the Fiend pinned Braun Strowman to once again become the Universal Champion. The match was hard-hitting and intense and I was absolutely hooked and entertained throughout. Watching it was clear things could have gone either way and it made sense for both men to walk out as champion. There were, of course, a few surprises here one being Alexa Bliss not being involved and the other Roman Reigns’ shock return at the end of the evening. Now, we will get into this in a moment but the return of Reigns and what we saw from last night has given us plenty of reason to believe that he could very well be the next Universal Champion especially considering the little character change that was evident. Surprisingly, I would love to see him as champion at some point especially with this new attitude but another short reign for the Fiend is extremely frustrating and worrying. I would love to be proven wrong here but following the actions of the main event and closing scenes of SummerSlam we may be about to see a short title reign for Bray yet again, lets just hope we can see some awesome moments from him in the coming weeks.

Another Strong Title Defence for McIntyre

I must admit that I was surprised at just how good McIntyre vs Orton was during last nights SummerSlam PPV. The two were clearly from different worlds and the characters were on clear display throughout! As two men with similar builds, it was interesting to see how they worked together but the result was a strong championship match up that I thoroughly enjoyed. This was yet another fantastic title defence from McIntyre who is really growing into this reign and shining. There may be more to come between these two superstars but there can be no denying just how strong Drew is looking, the big victories he is picking up and the fantastic performances we are seeing every time he steps in the ring.

A heel Roman Reigns?

The biggest surprise of the SummerSlam PPV was without a doubt the return of Roman Reigns. The WWE did a great job keeping this secret for I’m sure no one quite saw this coming! His attack on Braun Strowman and new champion, the Fiend, made for an unexpected conclusion to the PPV and has left fans with plenty to speculate about and look forward to. It was clear during his return that Reigns is sporting a completely new attitude and has left us all believing that a heel Roman is something we can most certainly expect which of course is very exciting and refreshing! As I mentioned earlier, I can most certainly see a title reign in his future (very soon) but considering the history he has with Braun and his attack on him specifically last night I really hope the WWE focus in on that for now as I really do believe it could be an important storyline for Roman moving forward with a new attitude!

SummerSlam 2020 was sure an interesting one! It was a slow start and several matches did disappoint however, a shocking ending, title changes and awesome moments made this a memorable event that has given us as fans plenty to look forward to and discuss! Of course, I would love to know what you guys thought so feel free to leave a comment below or tweet me over at @TezangiVictoria.
