Six Women I want to See Return at the Royal Rumble

Who doesn’t love January in the wrestling world? From hints at who may just break out in the year head to the start of the road to Wrestlemania! The next four weeks are sure to be very entertaining in the world of pro wrestling especially when we consider the New Years Evil NXT special as well as AEW’s move to TBS; There is sure to be plenty to talk about in the coming days and weeks but I thought I would skip ahead a little and have a chat about the thing I, of course, am most excited for, the Royal Rumble! My for sure favourite PPV of the year, it's where we see the road to Wrestlemania begin and an evening full of surprises and epic moments! Keeping the latter in mind, today I’m going to be taking a look at some of the female talent I’m hoping to see make a return during this year's Rumble match, can you guess who made the list?

Paige

Okay, so maybe it's wishful thinking to predict Paige as an entrant in this year's Royal Rumble match but I’ve seen several other fans discuss the possibility of the former Divas champion making a return to the ring and so I know I’m not alone in thinking this may just happen! As we all know, it was only a couple of years ago that Paige officially retired from in-ring action due to a neck injury but the fan favourite has continued to remain in the spotlight, working for the WWE, taking on several different roles. In recent months Paige has taken to Twitter to hint at a potential in-ring return and since her retirement has spoken across and expressed her desire to one day make a return discussing how much she misses wrestling. Now, a few years ago this may have seen impossible but with the likes of Bryan Danielson and Edge making a return to the ring after a career-ending injury it really does not seem all too impossible to believe the former divas champion may just be able to shock us all at the rumble.

Alexa Bliss

After losing to Charlotte Flair, failing to capture the RAW Women’s championship and the… well, death of Lilly the Doll Alexa Bliss has been absent from the WWE and it's safe to say fans have missed seeing her on their screens! The former multi-time champion spent 2021 working a new darker character following her possession of the Fiend and managed to adapt to her new role very well! Thereof course were a few missed opportunities but Bliss showcased her acting skills incredibly well and it was exciting to see a new side of a talent who has been so massively popular with the WWE Universe since her arrival. Now, it has been a hot minute since we last saw Alexa in action and what better way to bring her back to the ring than at the Royal Rumble PPV. Now, while I enjoyed the new side of Bliss I am hoping to see the old Alexa make a comeback this year and even though she is sure to receive a huge reaction from the live crowd upon a Rumbled appearance, hearing the old Bliss entrance theme and seeing the Goddess back could make for a highlight moment at the PPV this year.

Maryse

In recent weeks we have seen Maryse back on our screens alongside husband, the Miz and it appears we may be heading down the road mixed tag team match, something I really do hope we get to see! Now, despite being on and off WWE TV for a few years now Maryse is yet to make an appearance at the Royal Rumble and as someone who grew up during the Diva era and was a huge fan of Maryse, I have been waiting for her to show up in the Rumble from the beginning! It would make for a great moment for those of us who grew up during that time as well as a brilliant way to give Maryse her own spotlight and possibly add more fuel to the Miz and Edge fire by having the former divas champion collide with Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix inside the Rumble match.

Bayley

Damn it I have missed Bayley! Prior to suffering an injury Bayley had been on a role as a top heel within the women’s division and has been missed massively by the WWE Universe. She has continued to stay in the spotlight and in character with humorous tweets and sharing updates on her recovery and it appears as though the former champion may be set to make her return to action very soon! It's unclear as to where Bayley will go following her comeback but with so many new stars and shake-ups within the women’s division there are some exciting possibilities and I believe inserting her into the RAW Women’s division could make for some interesting potential matchups. It also goes without saying that Bayley making a surprise entrant at the Rumble and colliding with Bianca Belair is something I would love to watch!

Io Shirai

Of course, we can expect to see a couple of NXT Stars make an appearance at the Royal Rumble, its something we have seen throughout recent years and with many stars especially within the Women’s division set to make a jump up to the main roster we can expect a few of the female stars make their presence felt at the Rumble this coming month. One of those names has got to be Io Shirai. This is a woman who really has done it all over in NXT and 2022 is the time for the fan favourite to make her way to the main roster and really shake things up! Sure to make an impact inside the Rumble (this wouldn’t be her first appearance) it’ll be fun to see how she adapts, the moments she has during the match and who we see her collide with.

Asuka

And finally, we have Asuka! It has been far too long since we last saw Asuka in action but are we set to see the former champion make a return this coming January? Fans have been anticipating the in ring return of Asuka for a while now with so many dream matches and potential rivarlies awaiting her. Heading into the new year a possible Rumble appearance could instantly make her a favourite for the win, I mean who wouldn’t want to see her face off against Becky Lynch at Wrestlemania or even a second Mania contest with former rival, Charlotte Flair. Sure to receive a huge reaction from the live crowd regardless of whether or not she walks out with the win this would make for one of the highlight moments and rumble entrants of the PPV.
