Top Five Female Superstars Of 2016

Hello everyone and welcome back to Talk Wrestling World, I hope you're all well and good! So it has once again reached that time of the year! As we approach the end of two thousand and sixteen it's time to take a look back at the past twelve months in the world of professional wrestling as we highlight the best and worse moments of the year. If you have been following me for long enough and reading my blog for a while you would know by now that every year throughout December I take a look back and have a little awards season. This is where I get to spend the whole month taking you back through the entire year and what we saw happen in the world of pro wrestling. It's where I get to speak of and highlight some of the best and worse moments of the year including Superstar of the year NXT Superstar of the year, shock of the year, most improved of the year, match and NXT match of the year. It's a fun month and me always despite finding it a stressful few weeks, find it really fun to go back and re-watch a bunch of stuff from the past year. Today we're going to be taking a look at the women's division as I count down the top five female performers of the year including NXT Superstars. This is one of my favourite posts to write every single year and this year it means so much more than ever before. Two thousand and sixteen has been a fantastic year for women's wrestling. With that god awful divas championship out of sight and the return of the women's championship back we got to see the biggest Wrestlemania women's match in history, the first ever women's hell in a cell match, and Sasha Banks and Charlotte got to main event a pay per view. After years of waiting, we have finally been able to see women become equal and finally given the opportunity to shine. Now, today we are going to be counting down the top five Female superstars of the year and as always I would love to know what you think so feel free to leave a comment bellow letting me know who you would put as number one! As alway any recent blog post will be linked bellow.

Bayley

Kick starting this year's top five Female superstars of the year we have yet another personal favourite of mine, Bayley. Did you really think I was going to be able to write my top five female superstars of the year list without including Bayley? The leader of the hug nation has managed to go yet another year on top despite ending twenty sixteen without a championship around her waist. She did, however, start the year out as the NXT Women's Champion and what a brilliant reign she had as champ. We saw her week in and week out deliver to a high standard and took out every woman that threatened to stand in her way. From the likes of Nia Jax, Sasha Banks, Eva Marie, Carmella and Alexa Bliss. At the start of the year, we saw Bayley take on her close friend Carmella in what not only Carmella's best match to date but yet another strong championship match from Bayley who managed to keep hold of her title after defeating the Princess of Satan island. A little later on we saw her defend her title successfully again when she took on Alexa Bliss in a standout match of the year for the women's division. Her luck, however, began to run out when she met Asuka in the ring and at NXT Takeover Dallas she finally lost her title when the undefeated Asuka walked out as the new NXT Women's champion. Despite falling, Bayley didn't stay down for long and was very quickly back to focusing on reclaiming her championship she was however met by a familiar face on her way back up to the top, Nia Jax. A mini story between the two actually turned out to be one of my favourite little feuds from NXT this year and it really highlighted how far Nia Jax, in particular, had come. It also showed how far Bayley has come and the improvements she has made. Their matched lasted longer than what we saw last year and Bayley proved how much she wanted that title back. Eventually, she was able to work her way up and at NXT Takeover Brooklyn two she stepped back into the ring with Asuka and while she did fight back stronger Asuka was just too far ahead and Bayley was unable to reclaim the NXT Women's Championship. That match would end up to be her final NXT match and the fan favourite was given a true goodbye from the NXT crowd. It wouldn't be long before Bayley would then arrive on the main roster joining the Monday night RAW roster. Her jump up to the main roster is something that has been anticipated for a long time and the reaction she picked up on the night was as big as expected. Since her arrival on RAW, she has continued to make a huge impression and it's only a matter of time before she gets her hands on that's RAW Women's Championship. Bayley has had yet another brilliant year. She continues to be a huge, popular star and one of the main faces in the women's division and just had to be in this year's top five!

Becky Lynch

Up next in this year's top five female superstars of the year is Becky Lynch. I will admit that I'm no the world's biggest Becky Lynch fan. While I can appreciate she is a fantastic talent and easily one of the best all-around performers in the women's division I've never jumped on the Becky Lynch bandwagon and I do believe she is the weakest member of the four horsewomen. However, she has without a doubt been one of the strongest female performers of twenty sixteen and she has to be mentioned in today's blog post. So the year started out strong for Becky. Working a feud with Charlotte she managed to find herself competing in a couple of singles matches against the former NXT Champion as she looked to dethrone her former ally in a number of championship matches including a one on one bout at the Royal Rumble pay per view back in January. We then saw her and Sasha Banks compete to become the new number one contender a couple of months later with both women looking to take Charlotte on at Wrestlemania. In the end, after several standout matches that saw both women fail to score a victory over the other, it was announced that at Wrestlemania both Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch would compete against Charlotte in a triple threat. The match itself was an easy standout and personal favourite of mine of the year. It was the biggest women's match to grace the Wrestlemania stage and Becky Lynch found herself as one of the best all-around performers of the night. Her loyal fans stood by her a hundred percent and she killed it on the night showing more of her move set and giving both Sasha Banks and Charlotte a run for their money. She may not have walked out the victor but she did give a fantastic performance and gave so much story and character to this match. Throughout the rest of the year, she found herself working more storyline's and competing in several matches throughout the year. She was also the first women drafted to Smackdown LIVE and several weeks later she was crowned the first ever Smackdown LIVE Women's champion. Throughout the year Becky has cemented herself as a true fan favourite and one of the leading women in the women's division today and I predict an even stronger and better twenty seventeen.

Alexa Bliss

Throughout of the year season, you are going to see me talk a lot about Alexa Bliss as she is set to feature on several other blog posts over the next thew weeks. Her first appearance, however, comes from today as she enters in at number four in my top five female superstars of the year. If you have been reading my blog for long enough you will know all too well that I have been a huge Alexa Bliss fan right from the very start and this year she really has shown why she has been worth the hype this entire time and why her fanbase continues to grow every single week. Two thousand and sixteen really has been Alexa's year. She has shown huge improvements in the ring, on the mic and as a character. She started the year out still working with Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake and managed to outshine both superstars. Her facial expressions, backstage work and involvement in matches and storyline's put her centre stage. However, as the year progressed we saw the three superstars part ways and eventually they all went about to do their own thing, something I will be talking about in more detail over the next few weeks or so. Alexa then went on to shine on her own as we saw her really step it up in the ring. She was finally given the time to shine and that is exactly what she did. Focusing her sights on her the NXT Women's Championship taking on every woman that stood in her way. Her stand out match of the year and the match that changed everything around for Bliss was her singles match against Bayley on an episode of NXT. Now, if you haven't seen this match I seriously advise you to go and check it out! While it wasn't on the level of Banks VS Bayley this was an easy favourite of mine when it comes to women's wrestling in the WWE this year. Bliss showed off her skills in the ring and her ability to tell a story and bring character to a match. She may not have gotten the win but she was the easy star of this match and we really got to see just how much she had started to win over the NXT Universe. A couple of months later and Alexa was drafted to Smackdown LIVE where she very quickly became one of the standout stars on the roster. Making an impact very early on she made her presences known picking up her first win on Smackdown LIVE during her first appearance and since then has continued to stay in the spotlight and keep champ Becky Lynch on her toes as she chases after that precious Smackdown LIVE Women's championship and her hard work paid off when she defeated Lynch at the TLC pay per view in a tables match to become the second women in history to hold the WWE Smackdown LIVE Women's Championship. Despite not being on the roster for long Alexa proved that she is more than worthy of being champion and earned that title massivley. Alexa has very quickly become one of my favourite WWE Superstars. She has so much potential its crazy and I don't doubt for a single second that she is gonna be a huge star in two thousand and seventeen.

Sasha Banks

Pretty much everyone knows that I am a huge huge Sasha Banks fan, I have been from day one. Over the past couple of years, she has proven to be one of the standout stars in the women's division taking women's wrestling to whole new heights. As one of the leading faces in the revolution, Sasha remained one of the biggest talking points in wrestling today and rightfully so. Two thousand and sixteen saw the boss reclaim her throne as she made an even bigger impact and continued to take women's wrestling to points we never thought we would see. She started out the year still working alongside Naomi and Tamina but eventually would break away from the duo when she made a return to action at the Royal Rumble pay per view. Picking up a huge reaction from the live crowd Sasha showed the world that she only has her sights on become champion and after taking out both Becky Lynch and Charlotte she set her sights on that title and made it clear she was going to be the next champ. In the weeks that followed, Banks gained plenty of momentum and a brief alliance with Becky Lynch allowed her to take out former allies, Naomi and Tamina. As we have already touched on today, the Boss and the Irish Lass kicker then moved on to competing against one another in the hopes to become the new number one contender but several failed attempts at crowning that number one contender resulted in both women walking into their first Wrestlemania match and I have to admit that I did believe Sasha would be walking out champ along with many other fans. Her entrance was suited for a true boss with cousin Snoop dog by her side she set out to not only walk out as the new WWE Women's Champion but honor her idol, Eddie Guerrero. She, of course, had a fantastic performance on the night pushing herself to new heights and some believed she was the star of this match. You will probably remember me going on a massive rant about Sasha not winning this match and trust me I'm still not over it! The Boss then took a thew months out of action but upon her return set her sights on becoming champion and this time nothing was going to stop her and on episode of Monday night RAW she and Charlotte delivered what was one of my favourite matches of twenty sixteen and the boss finally got her hands on that championship. Now this year really has been a tough, up and down one for Sasha Banks. After winning the women's championship she then lost it only weeks later at SummerSlam and didn't have a much longer second reign however when we think about what she has done no one can deny, whether you love her or hate her that she is one of the biggest stars in the WWE today and one of the best wrestlers in the world. We saw her main event Monday night RAW, compete in the first women's hell in a cell match, become a three-time women's champion take part in an amazing falls count anywhere match, defend her titile in a brilliant thirty minuet iron man match and main event a WWE pay per view. While I hate how long her championship reigns were this year I'm hoping to see her crowned champion again in the new year and finally have that reign she deserves but for now let's take not on how brilliant she was in twenty sixteen.

Charlotte

Regardless of being the world's biggest Sasha Banks fan and while I would have loved to have put her first, two thousand and sixteen has been dominated by one woman in the WWE and that women is Charlotte Flair. Since arriving on the main roster in two thousand and fifteen the second generation superstar has taken control of the women's division and throughout the past twelve months, she has continued to stand on top and prove herself to be one of the greatest female athletes in WWE and pro wrestling history so short into her career. Starting twenty sixteen off as the divas champion Charlotte became a true fighting champion taking on defeating any women that stood in her way from the likes of Paige to Becky Lynch to Natalya and managed to fit in several storylines's that really did change the way storylines in the women's division are run. Almost every feud she worked was full of interesting promos, segments, and interviews all of which allowed the women to shine in a way they never have done before and for the fans to sit back and actually enjoy and interesting and gripping storyline in the women's division. One of her most impressive storyline's of the year saw her take on former four horsewomen allies Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks where the three women went on to compete in the biggest WrestleMania match the division has ever seen. For the firs time ever female superstars were given the opportunity to compete in a must see, standout match a Wrestlemania and that is exactly what it was. These three women took part in one of the strongest matches on this year's Wrestlemania card. On the night the Divas Championship was set to retire and a brand new Women's champion would be crowned, however, with Charlotte having her father by her side and after an impressive performance she was able to walk out with that shiny new title on her shoulder as she became the brand new and first WWE Women's Champion. Throughout the months that followed we continued to see Charlotte dominate and impress taking out every woman that threatened to take her title off her. Every week we would either see her compete or take to the mic to boast about her remain and claim her superiority. Her feud with Natalya was another standout of the year where several solid matches were presented to us along with fantastic storytelling. We then, of course, have her work with Sasha Banks. Two of the greatest female wrestlers in the world today going head to head in what was easily one of my personal favourite storylines of two thousand and sixteen. While I along with
the majority of the WWE universe hated the hot potato situation with the championship these two delivered some of the greatest matches of the year, matches that will go down in history. In these
match, Charlotte proved she was capable of bringing so much character and charisma to her matches while also putting on fantastic performances in the ring showcasing her brilliant athleticism. The spots we have seen delivered by Charlotte this year have honestly left me speechless at times and in
complete awe. The pair then went on to not only main event Monday Nigh RAW but become the first women to main event a WWE pay per view and the first two women to compete inside Hell in a Cell where Charlotte once again became champion. She also competed in a fantastic falls count anywhere match where she did loose the title however regained several weeks later in an epic thirty minuet ironman match.Whether you love her or hate her you cannot deny the simple fact that Charlotte Flair is the best thing in women's wrestling today. Her mic skills continue to slowly improve, her character develops more and more over time and her wrestling ability and athletic skill are like no other in her division. She walks out of twenty sixteen a four -time women's champion and has spent and entire year undefeated on pay per view, something no other superstar has ever accomplished. I have always been a fan of Charlotte's work but this year she has completely turned things around to a whole new level. She is easily one of the greatest heels on the roster today and has without a doubt become one of my favourite superstars and no women is more worthy than being named female superstar of the year.

So that is this years list of the top five female superstars. The women's division really has been put centre stage this year and every single woman has done an amazing job. I can only see the division growing and getting stronger and I cannot wait to see what two thousand and seventeen has in store for the women's division. As always you can have your say and let me know who has been your top female performer by leaving a comment bellow or by dropping me a tweet at @TezangiVictoria.
