One Month After Evolution: What Still Needs to Change in the WWE Women's Division

The first ever all women’s WWE pay per view is upon us. While the build may be weak the excitement is in there for an historic and important night and throughout the next week I will be focusing massively on this event and the women’s division here on my blog! To kick start thing off I’m going to be diving into what the WWE must do following this PPV to further push the women’s Evolution taking things to new heights and truly allowing the female talent to be equal to men. This is a topic I am personally super passionate about so let’s not waste any more time and dive right in.

Longer Matches

One of the main issues the WWE still have is providing the women’s division with longer matches on a weekly basis. Despite Monday night RAW last three hours there is still a lack of in ring time for the women’s division with female talent struggling to fit in memorable matches every Monday and Tuesday night. While men dominating weekly shows is something we won’t see change anytime soon its vital that the women of RAW and Smackdown LIVE are given the chance to work lengthy matches reminding fans of what they can do in the ring but also to further push the division as a whole and add more excitement and interest to a storyline or feud. An evolution means nothing without the chance to show what they have been fighting for.

Introducing Tag Team Championships

As I am currently writing this there is plenty of speculation regarding the WWE introducing tag team titles to the women’s division with a heavy rumour suggesting an announcement will be made regarding this on the night of the Evolution pay per view and while it has divided opinion I strongly believe this is a necessary step. Tag team titles for the women is something many have wanted to see for a while but with the numbers now on their side and the division ready for this next move the timing appears to be perfect. Throughout the past year the WWE have done a great job building teams and alliances within the women’s division from The Riott Squad to Absolution, from the IIConics to the return of the Bella Twins its evident the WWE have deliberately kept these women together for a reason and it makes sense to now introduce the one championship the division truly needs.

More Main Event Slots

Over the past couple of years, we really have seen women given several chances to main event episodes of RAW, Smackdown LIVE, NXT, and pay per views including Hell in a Cell, The Royal Rumble, and NXT Takeover Respect with every single spot truly deserved. Now, I am not expecting nor want to see the women main event every single show every single week however, I also do not want to see the male talent or certain superstars’ main event every week. We are in twenty eighteen seeing a difference in what is provided to us as main events and this is an area that is improving however, we still don’t see women put into these slots enough. The Hell in a Cell main event between Sasha Banks and Charlotte was one that divided opinion, but I personally liked that it wasn’t perfect and I would love for women to be given more opportunities to main event other big pay per views and weekly episodes again to boost storylines, push feuds, and remind fans the women’s division content is equally as important and interesting as the men’s.

Involvement with Factions

An area the WWE do fail in, and this is something I have spoken about a few times here on my blog before, is involving its female talent in faction. An all-women’s faction could work very well if done correctly which isn’t something they have gotten right with the Riott Squad but there is great potential with several names currently down in NXT which I will be talking about in more detail soon! However, what I personally would love to see is the women involved more in factions with male superstars. Nikki Cross is a perfect example of this being done correctly with Sanity and with the women’s division full of so many amazing talents they really do have the numbers and the names for the job. There will be those who won’t see the point in placing women in factions with men that could over shadow them but again, if done correctly this is a move that could benefit certain superstars, give women more of a role, and create even more character depth.

Less Pointless Tag Team Matches

A problem I personally still have with the WWE women's division and how they are booked is the contiuous use of pointless tag team matches. While we have had some solid bouts here its a cheap and lazy way of booking the women's division to get them on a show and the majority of the time the better option would have been to completely leave them off a show instead of booking one of these bouts. The pointless multi person tag team matches do nothing for building momentum, telling a storyline, and engaging fans and the division would much better benefit from being booked in longer singles bouts instead!

Main Event Wrestlemania

And to conclude, a big one, Main Eventing Wrestlemania. If you had told me five years ago that the women’s division has a chance at main eventing an up and coming Wrestlemania pay per view I would of laughed you away and not because of the talent but because of the position the women’s division played at this time. As of right now however, there is a strong belief that the female talent could easily main event the biggest pay per view of the entire year. Of course, there will be critiques and many whom believe the timing isn’t quite right but with the likes of Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey, Asuka and so many more on the roster it wouldn’t be too difficult to sell such a main event involving Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey for example. That exact match is a current favourite to headline an up and coming main event and the fact I am even able to type that shows just how far we have come but actually seeing it happen will be the biggest and ultimate step in the women’s evolution.

And that was my little list of the things I believe the WWE need to do next to further push the women’s division; do you agree or disagree with my points? Let me know down in the comments below!
