Women Who Would Have Been Tag Team Champions
The WWE introducing tag team titles to the women’s division
was a brilliant next step in the women’s evolution and with the number of
female talents increasing across the WWE it made perfect sense. However, its
clear things haven’t quite worked out the way many wanted and at times its easy
to forget these championships even exist. Taking a look back at history while
the division wasn’t as deep and thick as it is today there are female duos who
would have made for excellent tag team champions and most certainly would have
held these titles if they existed during their time with the company.
LayCool
Michelle McCool and Layla really did make for a brilliant
duo. While they were not always given the time, they deserved In the ring to
showcase just how great they were in the ring the pair had a natural chemistry
and charisma. Michelle and Layla were great at genuinely leaving fans angry
with constantly mocking and humiliating fellow roster members and fans. These
two worked as the perfect mean girls of the WWE and we even saw them split the women’s
championship (quite literally) something we haven’t seen before or since. Now,
things may have ended with the pair going one on one with their careers on the
line but during their time together these two really were unstoppable and made
a major impact within the then divas division and had fans wishing there were
tag team titles for the female stars during a time when they struggled to get
five minutes on TV.
The Bella Twins
For years the Bella twins were the main reason why so many fans
wanted to see tag team titles introduced for the women’s division. From the
moment they arrived in the WWE they made shock waves through the divas and
women’s division using twin magic and remaining firmly by one another side in storylines
and matches. We saw them take part in tag team bouts and angles including the
divas' revolution angle prove that having women’s tag titles would have been so
fitting at this time and especially perfect for the Bella Twins. I am still
surprised the WWE never had the two come back and win the titles when they were
first introduced but who knows what the future may hold.
Lita and Trish Stratus
Despite being enemies throughout so much of their careers Lita
and Trish Stratus most certainly would have made for an epic tag team alliance.
The WWE is no stranger to putting two singles stars and most importantly two
singles stars who have been enemies together and seeing them go on to win tag
team gold taking Cesaro and Sheamus as a prime example of just that! Lita and
Trish made for iconic female athletes and changed the game in terms of women’s competition
within the wrestling world and the addition of being tag team champions would
have been such an interesting new element to their relationship. The pair may
have been bitter enemies but their talent and that chemistry was more than
enough for them to brilliant titleholders and work a great story between them
as champions also.
Kaitlyn and AJ Lee
Before tearing each other apart in one of the most memorable
rivalries in the women’s divisions history AJ Lee and Kaitlyn were best friends.
Going through the original NXT together and coming up to the main roster
remaining alongside one another they may have drifted apart at times but the
WWE really did do a great job with their storyline during a time that was
incredibly tough for female superstars and the pair stood out as two of the
best of this specific time. A reign as tag team champions would have been
another fantastic element to their angle and journey together and added more depth
to that storyline. These were two women ahead of their time and it's clear just
how much they would have benefited from these titles and how fitting they would
have been.
Emma and Dana Brooke
Of course, there is every chance Emma (now going by Tenille
Dashwood) could one day make a return to the WWE and make this actually happen
but during their time together in NXT Dana Brooke and Emma proved they would
have made for excellent tag team champions. While there was a power dynamic
here and Emma using Dana to a certain degree the two did make for a dominant
duo competing in tag team competition regularly and remaining by each other’s
side in an alliance that worked very well! Emma really did bring out the best
in Dana, both as a character and in-ring talent and this would have been a great
opportunity for both these women to be taken more seriously and have more in
ring time that possibly could have resulted in very different current position for
the both of them.
Throughout history, we have seen some fantastic female
alliances many of which we still haven’t even touched on in today's blog post!
So many of these women would have made for great tag team championship but the opportunity just wasn’t there, let's hope the WWE waste no time and hold back
any of the women within the tag team scene today who have great potential to be
champions.
