Why Charlotte Flairs NXT Women's Championship Reign is Causing More Harm than Good

Last Month at the twenty-twenty Wrestlemania PPV Charlotte Flair defeated Rhea Ripley to become a two-time NXT Women’s champion, a booking decision that really did divide fans. Flair has had eleven championship reigns throughout her WWE career and holding the NXT Women’s title in two thousand and twenty was always sure to be a decision that would massively affect the landscape of the black and gold brand. A month into her controversial reign has a decision that was arguably made to boost NXT ratings in fact seriously left negative consequences for the women’s division of NXT and is Charlottes title reign causing more harm than good?

Not a Mid Card Title!

One of the key problems I have had with Charlotte Flairs recent reign as NXT Women’s champion is the feel of the title being a mid-chard championship which just is not the case at all! Her frequent appearances on Monday night RAW have made the title feel as though it belongs on both brands as does Charlotte when in actual fact what we should be seeing is Flair on one show and the title on one show. The mid-card championship feels as made the NXT women’s title come across as just another prize for the women’s division and an extra element of Monday Night RAW taking away its true importance and legitimacy. If you’re a fan who only tunes into RAW then you are left feeling as though this is a less important title resting on the shoulder of Charlotte Flair not having true meaning or purpose and considering the history behind this championship its extremely frustrating to see this perception being formed.

Lack of NXT Appearances

When Charlotte Flair was crowned the NXT Women’s Champion the WWE should have made it clear that the black and gold brand is where she belongs. Her lack of NXT appearances makes NXT feel as though it's not quite good enough or big enough for the Queen and that seriously affects the brand and especially the women’s division there. The lack of showings at NXT also creates a part-timer feel to Flair as champion which isn’t what she is at all but as with Brock Lesnar and his WWE Championship reigns over the years the brief appearances while can in some ways be a very positive thing adding to the competition mainly what we see as the overall effect is fans lose interest, the division come across as being held back from opportunities and generally there is a negative feel. The back and forth between RAW and NXT is doing the championship no good, the division no benefits and there is that unique element of NXT being taken away in a clear way.

Effecting Momentum of the Women’s Division

While sharing the ring with Charlotte Flair is a huge deal and can showcase the best of some of the up and coming stars of NXT as well as give them a huge opportunity to stand out and turn heads so far that hasn’t been the case and instead what we have seen is a lot of momentum taken away from the division. The Mania Storyline did not do a great deal for Ripley and her loss sent an interesting message to fans and with stars including Kayden Carter have negatively affected the look of the division. Yes, it’s important Flair continues to gain momentum as champion but a squash style matches takes the momentum away from these women and airing these matches on RAW where the WWE show the women of NXT to be weak, falling to Flair in less than five minutes doesn’t leave fans wanting to tune into NXT later in the week taking away one of the whole reasons why Flair won the title in the first place.

Questions Faith in NXT Women’s Division

There has been a lot of rumour suggesting Flair won the NXT women’s championship at Mania to boost NXT ratings further and while it makes sense and I can understand why the decision was made for that and more reasons what her win has done has shown a lack of faith in the NXT Women’s division. If there is truth behind this rumour, then there is an immediate thought that the WWE just don’t have the faith in the NXT Women’s division they should have which is ridiculous considering the black and gold brand arguably has the best and strongest women’s division not only in the WWE today but in the industry right now. With the right booking, Ripley walking out with a huge win over Flair and lengthy interesting matches the WWE could have achieved everything they were after and more.

As I have mentioned, its clear why the WWE decided to crown Charlotte Flair the new NXT Women’s champion and it has to be said that there are some dream matches awaiting Flair in NXT where we could see career defying moments for the stars of the future and potential match of the year candidates however, so far Flair's reign has looked to cause more harm than good. Moving forward it's vital the WWE move Flair further away from Monday night RAW appearances and feature her regularly on NXT and more than just a superstar you would be lucky to compete against but a fighting champion looking to prove a point, work storylines and in fact have an entertaining and effective title reign.
