Everything the WWE Got Right With Women's Division at WrestleMania 36

It’s crazy to think there was once a time where women went almost a decade without competing at Wrestlemania. The twenty-twenty edition of the biggest event of the year went down as a historic two-night PPV and while there were some mistakes made the WWE excelled in many areas including how the women’s division was booked. With five matches on the card for the female talent including four title defenses, there was plenty to enjoy and the quality of each match was so incredibly high! A couple of weeks since the Wrestlemania too big for one night and we are going to be going back through the very special and unique event as we discuss everything the WWE got right with the women’s division at Mania twenty-six.

Booking of the Tag Team Championships

I’ve said it a million times before, but the WWE continued to get everything wrong with the women’s tag team division despite the talent being there as well as the opportunities. The booking is weak and inconsistent and several names are not being used to legitimize tag team action within the women’s division and the titles, however, at Wrestlemania thirty-six a couple of weeks ago fans saw night one open with these titles on the line when the Kabuki Warriors took on the team of Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross. Both teams are of course, popular with fans and the build to this bout was decent considering the circumstances. What I loved about this Mania match up was the time the two teams had. Hitting that fifteen-minute mark there was a lot going on here with a brilliant balance of character work, close calls, and brilliant wrestling. There was a bit of everything here, everyone got their special spots in and the match overall felt evenly spread out with a great time slot. This is what was needed to showcase the women’s tag team division and get people talking. It proved that with the attention and time we can see great things from these titles, and I can honestly say I was really entertained watching this opening bout.

Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville’s Involvement

While they didn’t compete at Wrestlemania Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose did have their moment at the biggest event of the year during the Dolph Ziggler vs Otis match up on night two. An entertaining bout with a good solid build there was plenty to enjoy here and fans saw a satisfying end result. With Deville at ringside and Many coming down to the ring and playing a part during those closing moments it tied the story together. Both women had a big part in the build to this matchup, so it was great to see them also featured at Mania. There is of course, still plenty to come from these two but their little role at Mania was a great addition and it was brilliant to see them smartly used here.

Becky Lynch Retaining RAW Women’s Championship

Okay, so as the world’s biggest Shayna Baszler fan I was of course slightly pissed off she didn’t walk out of Wrestlemania the new RAW Women’s champion. I was surprised and can defiantly see how so many would believe this was a mistake but, in all honesty, I believe the WWE made the right move here. So many of us were expecting to see Baszler walk out the victor and so taking away that predictability was great here. It was nice to see something I wasn’t expecting and knowing there is more to come from these two is most certainly interesting. Of course, creatively there was some great work that could have been done with Baszler winning the big one at Wrestlemania, but I do like when we are surprised and not given what we expected.

NXT Women’s Championship Defended

While I may not personally be the biggest fan of the end result of this match, I absolutely loved that we saw history made when the first NXT Title match at Wrestlemania was brought to our screens. Rhea Ripley has been a great champion and is sure to be a huge name in the future of the company. Taking on a rather similar opponent in Charlotte Flair was bound to be a career highlight for the Aussie star and I have to say that this was my favorite women’s matchup of the Wrestlemania weekend. Charlotte winning the Royal Rumble was again something I wasn’t a fan of but the angle at which the WWE worked and seeing her set her sights on the black and gold brand most certainly kept me entertained and the two done a great job working an intense bout on the second night of the PPV. We can sure expect to see more NXT titles defended at Wrestlemania in the future and more NXT stars grace the Mania stage but I’m so glad to see that is was the women given the historic moment and for them to work such a memorable bout.

Lengthy matches

Growing up I hated seeing short women's matchups at Wrestlemania. Looking back there were so many bouts that could have been something really special had the women been given more time. Over recent years we have seen women being given more time at Wrestlemania and at this years event all four title matches were most certainly lengthy! All at least hitting the near fifteen minuet mark none felt rushed or underdone and I can honestly say I enjoyed every single bout that took place! This year really did show fans how far the WWE has come with female talent and how they are booked at Wrestlemania and this is the first time I can say I honestly enjoyed every single women’s division matchup of the Mania card. Let's hope we continue to see more longer women’s matches at the grandest stage of them all (and other PPV’s).

The Smackdown Women’s Championship Match

I’ll admit that I wasn’t all too excited for the Smackdown Women’s Championship Match. Many of you will know that I’m not the biggest fan of Bayley and so here Mania title defence in fatal five-way wasn’t something I was jumping with joy for, however, I have to say that I really did enjoy this bout. What I usually hate about matches with this stipulation particularly within the women's division is the early eliminations. Its usually only a couple of minutes before we see someone eliminated and the action slows down for a bit but this time around what we got was a lengthy match with dream scenarios between the likes of Lacey Evans and Namoi and some great storytelling. Powerhouse Tamnia despite being eliminated first had some great spots and overall, it was a solid match up. We don’t always see the Smackdown Womens championship highlighted well and it can be overshadowed so easily but this was a great showing for the division and the championship.

Its pretty crazy to see just how far womens wrestling at Wrestlemania has come! 2020 was arguably the strongest showing of the WWE Women's division at the greatest event of them all and a month later I'm still so happy with the results and just how the division was booked (despite a couple of things I would have changed).
