Sonya Deville
Making history, Sonya Deville is the first openly lesbian WWE
superstar and she has been representing her community amazingly well! First
arriving in the WWE, Deville took part in the latest season of Tough Enough and
has since gone on to find success working alongside Mandy Rose. While there is
still, plenty more to see of Deville in the ring she is grabbing fan attention
more and more as the time goes by and it's evident from wrestling abilities that
she has huge potential and amazing things await her. Having Deville so open
about her sexuality wearing the LGBT+ flag on screen makes for a real special
highlight in the wrestling community today and seeing her do so on such a major
platform such as the WWE leaves me as a member of the LGBT community very proud
and moved!
Mike Parrow
Mike Parrow is a man I, unfortunately, don’t see many
wrestling fans talk about, however, the dominant force in the ring has done
amazing work outside of the ring sharing his story and journey in coming to
terms with his sexuality. Openly gay, Parrow is a man who inspires in the day
and takes control in the world of pro wrestling by night. A complete powerhouse
working the indie scene and growing in popularity. He’s an entertaining talent
with serious skill, speed and strength and with his work away from the ring so inspiring
and important his message empowers while his work as a pro wrestler on the
indie scene shows he is breaking down barriers and stereotypes better than any.
Nyla Rose
It breaks my heart to read some of the scary and dated hate
AEW Star Nyla Rose receives online. As
one of the only openly transgender women in the world of pro wrestling this
comes with plenty of negativity from trolls however, nothing will ever take away just how inspiring this woman is! Breaking down barriers and leading a new chapter
for the trans community Nyla Rose is vastly becoming a vital and major talking
point in the women’s wrestling scene. The doors of opportunity that been
provided to her speak volumes and her signing with AEW makes Nyla the first
Trans wrestler to work for a major mainstream wrestling promotion.
Charlie Morgan
British wrestler, Charlie Morgan is a name who has truly
come into the spotlight over the past year or so. From working occasional
matches for NXT to UK to growing in the British independent wrestling scene,
Charlie Morgan is an exciting up and comer. Again, she is name with plenty more
let to show and her careers looks to be very long and special. Charlie’s
standout promo alongside Nina Samuels sees Morgan deliver the line “Do you
think I’m scared to say it? Do you think I’m going to shy away from the fact I’m
gay?” continues to shine as one of those wrestling moments that leaves me with
chills and a huge smile on my face! The passion, the fire and the reality in
this segment were simply amazing and Charlie Morgan herself makes for a pretty
special talent on the scene today.
Fred Rosser (Darren Young)
Fred Rosser otherwise known as Darren Young has been one of
the biggest mainstream names in the wrestling to talk about his sexuality and do
so much work for the community. Coming out in a time where we still were not
hearing and seeing enough stars do so and represented Young became a standout
and as someone who was watching Young in the WWE at the time and being only
around thirteen myself it was very special for me personally to witness someone
who was also LGBT on my TV screen and representing me. It made me as a teenager
of colour also feel even more represented and he highlighted a major problem which
was the lack of representation. Today, Young now working as Fred Rosser continues
to work in the ring away from the WWE and it most certainly is worth checking
out his work both in and outside of a wrestling ring.
Jake Atlas
Jake Atlas is a very exciting talent on the wrestling scene
today. A simple search of his name on YouTube will present you with a list of
brilliant encounters against an array of different stars on the independent
scene. Jake has previously mentioned in interviews that he came out as gay as a
teenager and it didn’t go down all too well, however, he continued on with his dreams
and achieved his goal of becoming a pro wrestler and in time his family came to
truly accept and support him. Now, a multi-time champion he is smashing it on
the indies scene and his Lucha Libre style leaves him turning heads wherever he
goes.
Sonny Kiss
Anyone who knows me knows that I am totally obsessed with
Sonny Kiss and most probably in the running to be one of his biggest fans! From
the moment I first began watching him over in Lucha Underground, Sonny Kiss has
had all my attention and I’m very excited to see what the future holds for him!
Taking part in AEW as well as working across the indies scene Sonny Kiss
represents something, we don’t see enough yet so important, a femme gay black
man in the world of pro wrestling leaves him breaking down the barriers and
breaking the boundaries more than anyone! A massively exciting, athletic and skilled
star, Sonny Kiss has already taken part in an array of awesome matchups and I
honestly cannot wait to see what the future holds for him!
Shining a light on the LGBTQ+ Community in the wrestling
world is so important! As a young pansexual woman, it means so much and feels
so important to see these names mentioned today and so many others we didn’t
mention to day represent the community and breakdown barriers and challenge stereotypes.
There were of course so many other names I wanted to mention today and so I
would love to do a part two in the future !
