Six Women Who Have Proved Intergender Wrestling Works Today

Intergender wrestling really is a touchy subject. Its an area in the world of pro wrestling that truly does divide fan opinion and while I can understand why people would be against the concept I personally have always enjoyed intergender wrestling! Today, we don't see as much of it around with many promotions refusing to book intergender competition, however, recent work between Tessa Blanchard and Sami Callihan has raised debate and got the conversation going again. Now, there have been a bunch of women over the years who have mastered intergender competition and in today's blog post we're going to be looking at just five women who have proven intergender wrestling really does work and have a place!

Candice LeRae

A woman who has very much shone a bright light on intergender wrestling throughout her career and has been a major inspiration behind today’s blog post is current NXT Superstar Candice LeRae. Before signing with the WWE Candice became a major hit with fans worldwide and a made a name for herself due to the in-ring competition, she had alongside male opponents. Whether it be her husband Johnny Gargano or the likes of Joey Ryan and Ethan Page, Candice has proven that despite her small stature she is able to work genuine interesting, entertaining and strong matches against male opponents. This is a woman who made a name for herself working intergender matches and paved the way for a controversial are of pro wrestling.

Chelsea Green

Twenty eighteen was a great year for Chelsea Green. Awesome match after awesome match, a strong spotlight shining bright on her and ending the year signing with the WWE, the former tough enough star has taken the wrestling world by storm and one of the matches I personally enjoyed watching from her was a one on one contest against Pentagon Dark during an episode of Lucha Underground. Stepping in the ring with one of the hottest stars in the business today, one of the most intense and most experienced Green really had a task on her hands trying to steal the show but she not only stole the show but took part in one of the best Lucha Underground matches of the entire season! Proving to have zero fear against Pentagon she didn’t appear weak, not as technically strong or appear to be struggling to keep up on anyway. This was a brutal, barbaric match full of amazing wrestling skill and awesome spots and action that genuinely left me wondering who was going to walk away with the win.

Tessa Blanchard

Talking of standout stars of twenty eighteen, Tessa Blanchard has been one of the most talked-about female wrestlers on then scene for the past few years and there are no signs of her slowing down what so ever! During that time Blanchard has shared the ring with the likes of Will Ospreay, David Starr, AR Fox, and Ricochet. While Blanchard is not the poster girl for intergender wrestling she has indeed been a contributing name to highlighting the fact that size doesn’t come into the equation of trying to make intergender competition believable and strong.  Standing toe to toe against far larger and more experienced opponents Blanchard has shown herself to come across as legitimate competition to these male opponents and her singles bout against Ricochet, in particular, is most certainly one to watch! In recent months Blanchard has raised the bar and got fans talking once again regarding intergender competition with her work alongside Sami Callihan which has massively proved a point!

Ivelisse

Lucha Underground has become a strong home for Intergender wrestling. As one of the only promotions showcasing this stile of pro wrestling to be legitimate and not an afterthought each season showcases an array of awesome intergender matches. At the forefront of those bouts is Ivelisse. Past Opponents have included the likes of Joey Ryan and Mil Muertes for singles competition alone not to mention the stars she has stepped in the ring with during tag team action and outside of the temple. Ivelisse for me is a current talent on the scene who really is massively underrated, but these matches have shown her to be extremely talented and diverse not to mention she doesn’t appear out of place what so ever during these intergender matches.

Kay Lee Ray

On the theme of some of my favourite female wrestlers outside of the WWE today up next we have Kay Lee Ray, a woman who we just have to mention we are discussing intergender matches. Now, if you are not too familiar with the former Mae Young Classic competitor, I seriously advise that you go back and take a look at some of her work! From in-ring competition against the likes of Mikey Whiplash, El Ligero, Jimmy Havoc, Mike Bailey and so so many more Kay Lee Ray has not only shone a bright light on women working in the hardcore wrestling scene but been a key figure in showcasing intergender matches in modern-day pro wrestling and what an amazing job she has done! She has been a key part of major storylines for ICW as well as working alongside its top stars and becoming one of the company’s hottest attractions. The former champion has stood toe to toe with some great male opponents and if you want to see variety in intergender matches make sure to check out this woman’s work!

Taya Valkyrie

And the final name I wanted to talk about today is Taya Valkyrie. I’ve spoken about Taya a few times here on my blog and over on social media as in recent years she really has become someone I have enjoyed watching! One of the matches that really did grab my attention was her singles bout against Cage during an episode of you guessed it… Lucha Underground. In yet another match that has gone down as an all-time Lucha Underground best, Taya proved more than anyone that you can put a female wrestler in the ring with a heavyweight like Cage and in fact, get a great match from it. Throughout her career Taya has stepped in the ring with a number of different opponents and her fearless attitude and experience means she just had to feature today!

And that is my list! There are so many more female wrestlers I wanted to include in this blog post today but if anything I hope that today I have been able to highlight just some of the women on the scene today killing it in the area of intergender matches and showing that size and gender really doesn’t come into play in the world of pro wrestling!
