Mae Young Classic 2018 Round 1: Honest Thoughts and Lessons Learned

This past Wednesday round one of the twenty eighteen Mae Young Classic concluded and if the past month has taught us anything its that this is one damn must-see tournament. With standout performances, matches, and moments, the women involved have raised the bar and kept the WWE universe completely entertained creating one of the best and most must-see products to come out of the company so far this year. Over the coming days, I’m going to be looking back the first round of the second annual tournament kick-starting by taking a look at some of the lessons learned and biggest takeaways from the last few weeks! We will also be discussing my honest thoughts and next week I will be diving into the standout matches and stars so far! With a long intro out the way, let's dive into today’s blog post!

A Stronger Commentary Team

I’ll admit that I wasn’t totally sold on last years Mae Young Classic announce teamwork. While the table consisted of key figures and majorly popular Hall of Famers excellent in their line of work I was never truly sold on Lita as an announce team member and so when the table was shaken up this year and Michael Cole, Renee Young, and Beth Phoenix were provided with the role I was delighted, to say the least. Now, while Cole has made a few mistakes and delivered some classic cringe worth comments it’s evident the announce teamwork has been a lot stronger this time around. I’ve felt the chemistry far more, the three work amazingly well together, and not to mention how important and successful it was having two women on the announce team, making history in itself.  There was overall a better feel to this area of the show a second time around.

Major Signings Must Be Made

Later in today’s blog post, I’m going to be comparing this year’s tournament to the last and giving my honest thoughts there but what I must make clear now is the fact that I honestly do believe that the competition was much stronger this time around. So many matches left me wanting to see more of these women in the WWE. Consisting of currently signed and currently unsigned WWE superstars I ended up with a list of women who took part that I would love to see officially apart of the company. Looking at the performances from the past month its evident several women consisting of veterans and new faces would make for important figures in the WWE women’s division and the company should be looking to sign plenty of this year’s competitors!

The UK Women’s Division is in Safe Hands

The twenty eighteen Mae Young Classic saw several women from the UK division take part giving fans an insight as to what is to come in terms of those shows. Xia Brookside, Jinny, Toni Storm, Isla Dawn, and Killer Kelly were amongst those to take part this year in the Mae Young Classic and their performances went down and were noted as some of the best of round one. Their showing was simply fantastic and has made sure to send the message that the UK Women’s division is one to keep your eye as after these outstanding performances we can only expect the best of the best and the women’s evolution to reach new heights with these must-see women involved! Welcome to the WWE ladies!

Kaitlyn Must Re-Sign With the WWE

One of the standout performances for me personally came from a returning Kaitlyn. It’s been a while since WWE fans had seen the former Divas champion compete inside a World Wrestling Entertainment ring and this month the Hybrid Diva sported one heck of a comeback rocking a completely new look, attitude, and standard in the ring. Always, a solid in-ring performer Kaitlyn was been dubbed as an early favourite by many but after her surpassingly excellent performance against opponent Kavita Devi. Not only did the former champ welcome a new look but she came across better than ever in the ring against a tough and unique opponent. She was faster, stronger, more technically impressive and after that single performance, so many fans want to see her make a full-time return to the company including myself. She has experience, an amazing new image, and has clearly improved massively in the ring, the WWE would seriously benefit from re-signing Kaitlyn full time!

Early Exits and Could Have Made the Finals

With the competition being so high and so impressive this year it was clear that there was going to be some early eliminations that didn’t sit too well. The likes of Rachel Evers, Ashley Rayne, and Killer Kelly spring to mind after their outstanding performances in their round one matches. All three of these women and more deserved to have more exposer in this tournament and I know I for sure would have loved to have seen more from these women further down the line in the MYC. It must also be mentioned that several of the matches we saw in round one felt like finals bouts with Killer Kelly vs Meiko Satomura really proving exactly that. This was arguably the best match of the tournament (at least in my opinion) so far and watching it I did feel as though this could have been the match that took place at the Evolution pay per view.

It’s Just Better than Last Year

And to conclude, I have to make it totally clear that I honestly believe this years Mae Young Classic one hundred and ten percent tops last year. While twenty seventeen’s version has some excellent round one matches, fantastic competitors, and standout characters but the overall competition has been ramped up massively this time around. I’ve been more invested in the women involved, the characters and the bouts and with the overall quality of matches being so much stronger on top of the mix of veterans, newbies, stories told, and the announce team, I can honestly say that I have anticipated each episode of round one and I’m super excited for round two and the rest of the up and coming shows!

And those were my honest thoughts and takeaways from round one of the second Mae Young Classic. Next week I will be uploading a blog post looking at the standout matches and competitors so far as well as the round two matches I’m most excited about! As always, I would love to know what you guys thought so feel free to leave a comment below or tweet me over at @TezangiVictoria
