WWE Hell in a Cell 2018: Honest Thoughts

This past Sunday the WWE hosted the Hell in a Cell pay per view a card full of title bouts, hit rivalries, and promising collisions. The night itself provided fans with twists, turns, new champions, and a couple of surprises but just what were the best and worst moments? Was Hell in a Cell twenty eighteen worth watching? Let’s dive into one of the WWE’s most iconic pay per views and discover whether it truly works in today’s wrestling world.

“What is Randy Orton gonna do With a Screwdriver?”

Growing up in the noughties, it was stars like Randy Orton and Jeff Hardy I would watch on a weekly basis and so their growing rivalry over the past month or so has truly grabbed my attention! In saying, that I must admit that I wasn’t as excited for the matchup between these two as I would have expected but boy did they have a damn good showing. While not the match of the night the two engaged in an intense, barbaric, and brutal contest that showed stipulation PPV’s like this can work in the WWE today. Orton and Hardy used the ring, their surroundings, and all the objects they could get their hands on to take out one another and with a screwdriver, a bloodied and bruised back, and an all-around intense HIAC match this one was a show stealer and an important one in proving a big point!

A Cell was Needed

To say that a Cell was needed in the two women’s championship matches this weekend may be a little over the top. Both bouts delivered, and the stories were not massively in need of a Hell in a Cell match, however, for evolution purposes, I do personally believe at least one of these matches should have taken place inside the structure. It makes perfect sense for the women’s division to be given a match inside Hell in a Cell and the fact we didn’t get even one was a slight issue for me personally, believing that in twenty eighteen the female talent would have been more involved in the stipulation of the PPV. Both stories would have benefited from this kind of match especially considering the character of Alexa Bliss and the build we have seen between the former champ and Ronda Rousey. However, saying that, I must applaud all the women who competed this weekend for the amazing storytelling and the solid in-ring work!

Give them The Main Event

While Braun Strowman vs Roman Reigns main eventing the Hell in a Cell pay per view was justified it must be said that at some point soon fans must see the WWE Championship main event. It’s been far too long since the title was shown in the main event of Wrestlemania and any other major PPV shared by the two brands and this is a problem. The WWE title remains the most prestigious and important yet isn’t being treated like it. Styles vs Joe could main event any show and in the near future, I do believe its important this championship and possibly these two stars take the main event spot. Their matchup this weekend was strong, easy to invest in, and full of brilliant wrestling. Proving again to be two of the best fans were entertained from the get-go and Samoa Joe truly does make winning this title seem so important it's just a shame we don’t see it given the big spotlight it truly deserves!

So Close yet so Far Away

Keeping on the topic of the WWE championship match the closing moments really do need to be spoken about! The match itself was strong, could have been better most certainly, but a personal favourite bout of the night. The two told a story well but not as well as their first PPV encounter yet those closing moments ensured that their rivalry continues for at least another month or so and the story has intensified between them. With Joe believing he had won the match by submission but in fact Styles scoring the victory via pinfall it was a brilliant and smart way to conclude this match and I was left genuinely excited to see what will go down next between these two!

A Mess That Makes Sense

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, the rivalry between the Miz and Daniel Bryan has been one of my favourites for several months now and while the mixed tag team match wasn’t the best this past weekend I continue to truly feel invested in this story. Everyone involved played their roles perfectly, the characters were on point, and I did feel as though the mixed tag team match idea was the right move for this stage of the story. I liked the sneak win Maryse picked up and despite the messy ending and moments throughout this was an easy watch, entertaining, and a fun little match up.

She Just Keeps Getting Better

There really is no stopping Ronda Rousey. Despite what you may think of her journey and how quickly she has been pushed to the top there is no denying that rowdy Ronda Rousey continues to prove herself whenever she is in that ring competing. Her singles bout against Alexa Bliss was not quite a show stealer but it was yet another bout where the former UFC star showed fantastic growth in her wrestling skills and it's evident each time we see her she is simply getting better and better. As she continues to work against opponents of varying styles the future looks bright and interesting for the current champ!

The Main Event

The twenty eighteen Hell in a Cell main event was one big must see. Strowman and Reigns have collided previously in excellent matches that have gone down as some of the best of both their careers and so I was expecting this one to be another strong bout to add to the list. Just like previous encounters, this was extremely barbaric, and both men went to great lengths to ensure they walked out as champion. Again, the match really showed fans how well the HIAC pay per view can be done in this era in the WWE. What really gave this match the edge, however, was in the involvement of everyone else. Ziggler, Rollins, McIntyre, Ambrose, and of course a returning Brock Lesnar who added to the excitement and really shook things up. Heading into Monday night RAW we have loads of questions and loads to look forward to and with no one truly walking out the winner and so many names at the top of the roster tonight’s show is one to defiantly not miss out on!
