SummerSlam 2019: The Best Decsions and Moments
This past Sunday the WWE presented the two thousand and
nineteen SummerSlam PPV and while we saw some controversial booking decisions made
overall this was a solid show. The WWE did the right thing keeping the event
fairly short at three and half hours and a number of standout matches and
moments took place; with that in mind, however, just what were the best decisions
and moments made last night?

The Performance Nattie Deserved
Kick-starting the main show was the RAW Women’s championship
submission match between Natalya and Becky Lynch and while this may not have
been the match I was most excited for it did, in fact, turn out to be an epic
encounter and brilliant start to the night. In her home town, Nattie really did
feed off the energy from the crowd and the genuine investment from everyone in
the arena really added to this bout. Both women are incredible in-ring
performers and we really saw that point proven here. This was by far Natalya’s
best performance in a while in spoke volumes in terms of just how good underrated
she is. We may not have seen a title change her but the unique spots from the
challenger, the passion from both women, the storytelling told through each
superstar using the others submission hold this was a genuinely strong
wrestling match up and a huge title defence for Lynch not to mention a career highlight
for Nattie.
Short and Sweet
The one on one matchup between Dolph Ziggler and Goldberg
was one I certainly lacked interest in. I wasn’t sold on the build or the encounter
itself and so I’ll admit I wasn’t completely invested in what was going on, however,
I did like the WWE kept things short and sweet. The match was kept very simple
and it was exactly what was needed. The addition of what came after the match
itself was creative and a cool little twist on things. While I wasn’t a fan of
a current star getting walked over so much what I did like was the passion behind
Ziggler here. He refused to back down it added so much to his character that I
can't really fault.
The Dream Match Happened
Not only was Trish Stratus vs Charlotte Flair the match I
was most excited for on this years SummerSlam card, but it did, in fact, turn out
to be my favourite encounter of the night. From the hometown reaction for Trish
to the star power, Charlotte possessed this was simply a dream match you did not
want to miss out on. What we witnessed was a collision of two era’s, two huge factors
in the women’s evolution and two all-time greats in the world of women’s
wrestling. Considering this was Trish’s first singles match in eight years you
truly cannot fault the Hall of Famer. While there were a few messy moments
Stratus proved to be an all-time great while Charlotte Flair highlighted a new
face in the world of women’s wrestling. This was a special bout for superstars and a
massive highlight of the night and year.
Standout Performances for Title Contenders
We may have only seen one title change hands however; we did
see a number of challengers step up to the make and have the performance
needed. NXT call ups Ricochet and Ember Moon had an excellent showing this past
Sunday proving they most certainly not only stand as future champions but
standouts on the roster today. Both put up a strong fight for the titles they
were competing for giving the veterans they stepped in the ring with a true run
for their money. Now, I may personally not be a fan of the booking decisions come
the end of these matches but there is no denying both Ember and Ricochet had
breakout performances on a huge stage.
Far from Over
In terms of storylines, Kofi Kingston vs Randy Orton was the
standout of the SummerSlam twenty nineteen card. With their personal and
intense rivalry dating back ten years, there was so much backstory and heat here
that anyone would be excited for the encounter between these to veterans. The
match itself was strong, gripping and had so many excellent spots that kept
everyone completely invested. The conclusion to this match while controversial
added so much. We saw Orton completely distracted and focused on personally
hitting Kingston that it resulted in a count-out ending. Orton staring directly
at Kingston’s family and taking the loss here was a smart booking decision
ensuring things are far from over between these two superstars.
The Fiend Has Arrived
Wow. Where do we begin here? Highlight of the night? Without
a shadow of a doubt the in-ring return of Bray Wyatt. From the haunting
entrance to his dominant performance against Balor, I was left completely hooked
on my screen while being totally terrified at the same time! If there is
anything the WWE got completely right, it was this. The changes made are
utterly perfect and have left the WWE Universe desperate for more. The match
was, of course, kept short as it should have been but Wyatt, the Fiend made one
heck of an impact and the Wrestling World is buzzing for all things Bray Wyatt
after what we witnessed last night.
Seth Rollins Slays the Beast…Again
In all honesty, I did mention to pretty much everyone I know
that I wasn’t looking forward to Seth Rollins vs Brock Lesnar this past
weekend. I had next to no interest and the build didn’t completely sell me , however, I did tune into the bout and was left very happy with the end result.
Rollins put up one heck of a fight and showcased a great deal of heart, resilience,
and passion. The match last longer than I thought it would and I’ll be honest
and admit that I wasn’t expecting to see a title change happen. Of course, I
was personally delighted with the end result; Rollins as champion just works
better and ensures a true fighting champion and its what need. Fans are passed
the Lesnar style of champion and hopefully, now, we can close the book on
Rollins vs Lesnar.
To conclude, I actually did really enjoy SummerSlam this
year. While there were some controversial decisions made the night overall
presented fans with some excellent encounters and memorable standout moments
not only of the night but of the year. We did only see one title change hands
but again, it did feel like the right booking. In terms of disappointments, I
was expecting Sasha Banks to make a return so that did fall into the disappointing
area of the night but overall this was a solid PPV. To let me know what you thought of SummerSlam
twenty nineteen leave a comment below or tweet me over at @TezangiVictoria.
