Four Women Who Fell Victim to the WWE Divas Era

Women’s wrestling has come extremely far over the last five years or so. From a hashtag to main eventing Wrestlemania, the female talent of the WWE has been on one heck of a journey and the future of the division looks incredibly bright, but it took many years to reach the current stage we are at. For decades women in the WWE and the world of pro wrestling were subjected to degrading sexist segments, storyline’s and angles matches under ten minutes and a lack of respect, however, the talent and the potential has always been there. Way before there was a women’s evolution there were an array of women looking and waiting for a moment and an opportunity that never arrived but what could have been for these women if they were given a chance before an entire movement was forced to kick start?

AJ Lee

AJ Lee’s story is one that leaves me pretty frustrated. Viewed by many as a woman who kick-started the women’s evolution she arrived on the scene at a difficult time for women’s wrestling. Standing out as a female talent for her completely different look she sported an image that didn’t represent the model like diva the WWE had been pushing for years. Connecting with fans for her relatable image and persona she very quickly became a major favourite amongst the WWE Universe. Throughout her time with the company, Lee broke records, held championship gold, was involved in several major storylines alongside top male talent, and even took position as RAW general manager. AJ also took part in several standout matchups against the likes of Natalya and Kaitlyn and shone a bright light on the future of the WWE but after departing with the company in twenty fifteen it was clear Lee was leaving a crucial time in the WWE women’s division. If she had remained with the company, we would have seen AJ share the ring with fantastic talent including Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks amongst many and it’s a real shame we didn’t get to truly see the very best of her ring abilities.

Gail Kim

If there is any former WWE Diva the WWE massively underutilised its Gail Kim. While she did have a reign as champion and a spotlight in storylines across her career when compared to what she has accomplished away from the WWE it's evident the company missed out big time in pushing a talent who could have completely changed the game. Now an Impact Wrestling Hall of Famer Gail is noted as one of the greatest female talents of all time yet her run with the WWE does not highlight a fraction of what she is capable of. Here we have a very skilled, exciting and experienced superstar who fell massive victim to the WWE Diva era. She may have completely turned her carer around upon leaving the WWE but as a fan, you cannot help but think about what could have been.

Eve Torres

As one of the most memorable divas champion, Eve Torres is a woman with a fantastic resume. She took part in a solid rivalry with Kaitlyn, went down as a brilliant heel, had time to showcase her athletic abilities and worked alongside the likes of Zack Ryder and John Cena to further create a buzz around her name, however, looking back its clear we as fans didn’t get to see half of just what she was capable of doing. Her athleticism was something on show whenever she stepped in the ring, however, given such a lack of time to compete Eve often had no choice but to show the same spots and moves and was unable to showcase the diversity behind her move set. When going back and re-watching some of her matches you can see very clearly Eve had plenty to bring to the table and when you look at the current roster there is no denying she could be apart of some epic matches today that could really and truly highlight her athletic and wrestling ability.

Melina

One of the only women to hold both the WWE Divas and Women’s championship, Melina is a woman not to forget. Throughout her WWE career we saw her involved in MNM, standout as one of the most athletic women on the roster and pushed as one of the biggest stars of the diva’s division however, just like every other talent we have spoken about today because of the era in which she competed in Melina went massively underutilised! She, of course, had the popularity, she had the talent, she had, the push, and she had the title reigns but the lack of in-ring time was a key issue here. If women were given the time back, then that they are given today Melina would have been an even bigger standout and talking point. With bags of charisma, an entertaining character and strong wrestling capabilities she was massively held back by the lack of time female talent were given during this era.

And those are some of the women from the WWE divas era I believe were massively underutilised and failed. It’s a shame these four women were involved in an era that didn’t use female talent to their full advantage but today I’m glad we got to shed a little a light on what could have been!
