My Top 6 Wrestlemania Matches of All Time
This weekend we will witness a very interesting and unique
Wrestlemania. This time around the event will last two nights but the layout of
the shows has not yet been announced and we don’t know what match will take
place on each night but today the focus is going to be looking back at past
Mania events. The biggest show of the year has been going for thirty-six years
and throughout that time fans have been treated to some truly epic encounters
that have gone down as WWE and Wrestling classics. We, of course, all have our
personal favourites and in today’s blog post I’m going to be looking at my six
favourite Wrestlemania matches of all time!
The Rock vs Stone Cold Steve Austin (Wrestlemania 17)
One of my all-time favourite WWE matches has got to be The
Rock vs Stone Cole Steve Austin at Wrestlemania seventeen. I’ve mentioned
already this week that Mania seventeen is my personal favourite Mania event and
the headlining match up is most certainly a wrestling classic. A showdown
between two of the biggest names and characters in the history of the industry
this is a match that is still so heavily talked about and for many fans makes
their all-time favourite list. The build, the chemistry between the two men and
the story being told throughout was at a level that we so rarely see. There was
a degree of intensity, brutality and physicality that is incredibly special and
captivated the audience in a way that again, we don’t see very often. Both superstars
pushed each other to their limits, and it was clear just how much the match and
championship meant to both Rock and Austin. The desperation from Austin and the
things he pulled out in this match told the story of his career and the crowd
reaction added to the feel of this main event. The involvement of Vince McMahon
again just added so much entertainment and the detailed storytelling.
Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon (Wrestlemania 10)
As I’m sure you will be able to tell throughout this blog
post, I’m a fan of a good old fashioned Ladder match and there are not many
that have left me quite as entertained as the first Ladder match to be held on
the Grandest Stage of them all taking place between Shawn Michaels and Razor
Ramon. Two all-time greats and two men who so many grew up watching it made for
an instant classic to see these two square off at Wrestlemania ten in what went
down as a historic ladder match up for the Intercontinental championship. Today,
we see so many insane spots performed during these kinds of matches and while
they of course are amazing what was so great about this match was how the two
kept things simple. A highly entertaining bout between two very entertaining
superstars the match gave us everything you could ask for. The athleticism of and
showmanship of both men was on clear display and the pace of the action was so great
that everything looked fantastic. This is yet another all-time favourite matches
up of mine that has made the history books and for many is considered to be the
best match they have ever seen. The two men lived up to the hype of the match
on what was a stacked card and the build had so much depth that it made the
match even more standout and entertaining.
Edge& Christian vs The Hardy Boyz vs The Dudley Boyz (Wrestlemania 17)
Up next, we have another Wrestlemania seventeen match up and
a big-time fan favourite, the classic TLC tag team match between Edge & Christian,
The Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boyz. This was the type of match that really did
give us everything! Come the end it was clear that all the superstars involved
could not have added any more to the match than they did, and the encounter
went down as an instant classic and an all-time great in the industry. This was
a time where tag team wrestling was at its best and the division continues to
be compared to what we saw here and especially compared to what we saw in this
match. The spots performed were phenomenal from that epic spear to the table
spot of all table spots. This was one of the most entertaining matches I have
ever seen and one of the best and most complete bouts to ever grace the Mania
stage. I would still say this is my all-time favourite tag team match and
potentially my personal all-time favourite Wrestlemania and WWE match up.
The Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania 26)
The streak vs career match between the Undertaker and Shawn
Michaels is a big-time Wrestlemania favourite for so many fans! I remember
watching this match with my brother and being on the edge of my seat. Here we
have two superstars I grew up watching an idolising competing in a match where
so much was at stake and on the line for both men. There was an intense history
and build between these two and this match and with high expectations following
their epic encounter the year before all eyes were on Taker and Michaels as
they raised the bar and exceeded expectations in what will forever be
highlighted as an all-time great at Wrestlemania and within the world of pro
wrestling. The emotion, the intensity and the power behind some of the spots
performed throughout this match were at a completely different level.
Trish Stratus vs Mickie James (Wrestlemania 21)
In recent years there has been some incredible women’s
matches at Wrestlemania including the historic main event between Ronda Rousey,
Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair but it’s the one on one encounter for the Women’s
Championship between all-time greats Trish Stratus and Mickie James that I had
to include in this blog post. This was a match that for me watching as a kid
signified change and hope. The two women were given more time than we were used
to seeing for female talent especially at Wrestlemania and the interest fans in
attendance had in this match is something at we still don’t always see for the
division. Despite not having the twenty minutes the female talent today are
given at the grandest stage of them all Mickie and Trish gave the best match
they could with the time they had and created a Wrestlemania standout for the
women’s division. The bout had a fantastic build, brilliant storytelling,
awesome matches and fans witnessed a star being born in Mickie James.
The Undertaker vs Triple H ( Wrestlemania 28)
I remember watching
this match live and instantly thinking halfway through, this is one of the
best matches I have ever seen! Growing up both the Undertaker and Triple H were
big-time favourites for me and my brother and so seeing them collide in another
Mania match up and not just any match but inside hell in a cell and a special
guest referee in the form of Shawn Michaels. I love a match with a good build
and plenty of backstory to it and this match had it. We had three men who truly
paved the way and have been highlighted as all-time greats sharing the ring in
what was an incredibly intense and physical match. Triple H and Taker to each
other to their limits and the brutality of this match while catered to the
style of Triple H also reminded us all how barbaric and badass the Undertaker
is. Including the addition of Shawn Michaels in this match, there was an added
intensity and interest from fans as many wondered how much of a role he would
play in this encounter considering all the history he had with both men, especially
at Wrestlemania. In the end however, Taker scored another huge victory, this
went down as one of my personal favourite Triple H matches and the showing of
respect between all three men come the end of the bout made for yet another
special moment on the grandest stage of them all!
There were, of course, so many other matches I wanted to
include in this post! The other Rock vs Austin match, Sasha Banks vs Charlotte
Flair vs Becky Lynch, and of course Austin vs Brett Hart but what makes your
list? Let me know down in the comments below what your all-time favouite
Wrestlemania Match is or tweet me over at @TezangiVictoria.
