Weird and Wonderful Characters in Pro Wrestling Today

While brilliant in-ring skills are obviously important in the world pro wrestling it’s just as if not more crucial to have natural excellent charisma. This, of course, something that can’t always be taught and happens to simply be something you do or don’t have. As of today, the wrestling world is jam-packed full of amazing all-around performers but just what and who are some of the best characters on the scene right now? Bellow we have listed seven talents both in and outside of the WWE who work the strongest characters of this generation.

Pentagon Dark

Anyone who knows me knows all too well I am a huge Lucha Underground fan and Pentagon Dark/Junior just happens to be one of my personal favourite wrestlers on the scene today. For the past four years or so Pentagon has genuinely been one of the talents that have grabbed my attention more than any other and I honestly could watch him all day long. His character both in the role of a heel or a babyface is totally gripping. He’s dark, intense, unpredictable, barbaric. When we look at recent work between the likes of Sami Callihan, Cage, and Vampiro, for example, we can see just how well his character has been on display. Totally ruthless and fearless, Pentagon is hands down one of the best all-around talents in the wrestling world today and absolutely gripping.

Nikki Cross

Moving over to the WWE and diving into the female talent I honestly do believe there is one woman who stands out more than any other in terms of character work and that woman is, of course, Nikki Cross. We have seen the “crazy girl” character used throughout several wrestling promotions with the WWE using names such as AJ Lee and Alicia Fox as prime examples in recent years; Nikki Cross, however, has taken this popular character and made it into something unique and entertaining. This isn’t the story of a woman scorned by a lover but instead a female talent who has found herself as part of an insane faction. Misfits coming together to create a unique bond and everything she has done has been so strong. Her character work is so convincing and because of that, she provides a level of entertainment we don’t see often enough in the women’s division. Everything she does she does to fit her character perfectly with how her title match against Shayna Baszler at a recent takeover event ended being another example.

Velveteen Dream

With one of “Unique Characters” in mind, we must next discuss NXT Superstar, Velveteen Dream. While he may not be one of the longest-serving NXT superstars, the Dream is one of the most talked about, popular, and entertaining talents in all the WWE. His flamboyant, eccentric, and dramatic character has completely allowed him to stand out more than anyone else and his confidence, uniqueness, and convicting manner has won over fans worldwide. This is a man who pushes the PG rating, shows signs that he would of fitting into the Attitude Era perfectly every time he is on screen and gives an edge to an era in the WWE that struggles to push boundaries. Reminding many of an old-school Goldust, the Dream is one of the most captivating men in all pro wrestling today.

Mickey Whiplash

Moving over to the UK scene now and we focus our attention on one of the most sinister, unique, and controversial characters possibly in the history of pro wrestling. Scottish promotion ICW is renowned for pushing boundaries, going just that little bit over the top and more, and providing gripping, intense, and adult content. One of ICW’s top stars is of course veteran Mickey Whiplash who possess a dark, twisted, satanic, and of course entertaining character that sure gets fans talking. Most certainly the most controversial characters on today’s list, Whiplash has perfected and developed his character amazingly well over the years and whether you are aware of him and/or this promotion he is most certainly a name worth checking out.

Sami Callihan

And to conclude this part in my look at some of the standout characters in the wrestling world today we have a big personal favourite of mine in Sami Callihan. A man that really has travelled the world and stood out for his excellent character work, Callihan while controversial is one heck of a talent. Whether it be NXT, IMPACT Wrestling, Lucha Underground, or elsewhere, Callihan has impressed and stole the show not only for what he can do inside the ring but for his convincing character. The ability to adapt where necessary depending on what promotion he is competing for Sami is always on form and deserves to be spoken about far more for his sheer talent regardless of the role he is in!

And there we have it, those are just five of the most convincing and entertaining characters in wrestling today.
