Should Kenny Omega Head to the WWE? The Argument For and Against

Since the dawn of the new year, wrestling fans have not stopped talking about former IWGP Heavyweight champion, Kenny Omega with news of a departure from NJPW dominating wrestling news. As of the last twenty-four hours, it has become official and Kenny Omega is now the biggest free agent on the scene after announcing a leave from the Japanese promotion. The reveal has created a huge discussion amongst fans with many speculating that this is the final step in proving Omega is, in fact, making his way to the WWE. In today’s blog post we are going to be looking at some of the reasons for and against Kenny debuting in World Wrestling Entertainment. Don’t forget to leave your thoughts below!

Reason NOT to Sign – Entertainment over Wrestling

While one of the main reason Omega is such a huge success falls down to his entertainment factor and ability to captivate via character and storyline his in-ring work has made him the star he is today, created his legacy and raised the bar and a big concern I personally have is whether or not he will have many opportunities to compete at the level we have seen him do so in the past. With the WWE having short matches, less actual wrestling time on RAW and Smackdown LIVE and a stronger focus on storyline’s is the WWE truly fitted to the motivation, style, and personality of Omega and will we honestly get the best out of him?

Reason to Sign - Dream Matches

We all have our own favourite Kenny Omega match with the now former champion competing ins several bouts that highlighted him to be one of if not the best in the world today and with that in mind many including myself have an endless list of dream matches for Omega involving current WWE talent. From the likes of Seth Rollins and John Cena to Andrade Cien Almas, Samoa Joe, and Daniel Bryan there is a forever growing list of names wrestling fans are desperate to see step in the ring with Omega and many if not all those matches may never happen unless Kenny signs with the WWE and soon!

Reason NOT to Sign – Lack of Faith

The main concern I personally and so many other fans have with the idea of Omega signing with the WWE is the lack of faith in the company itself. With the likes of Finn Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura being prime examples of top former NJPW stars the WWE has failed in recent years it does create a level of concern that the WWE may just send Omega in the same direction. Both Balor and Nakamura had an excellent start when they originally signed with dominant runs as NXT champion, historic moments and classic matches however, the past two years has been extremely weak and disappointing for both men raising concern as to whether a good couple of years will await Omega only to fall backward massively early into his signing with the company ending up in the same position as Shinsuke and Balor.

Reason TO Sign – Timing

As I am writing this there could not be a better time for Omega to debut with the WWE. It was back at the Royal Rumble PPV/match only a couple of years back that fans witnessed AJ Styles make his huge arrival in the WWE kick-starting an extremely dominant run with the company that continues to this date. With Omega at the top of his game, accomplishing all he can in NJPW, taking a leave, and being such a major talking point as well as the Rumble PPV pending the timing is simply perfect. While it would be nice for his arrival to feel like a bigger surprise moment the debut would go down as a surprise regardless and sure noted as one of the highlight moments of the year. I’m confident there will be many more good moments for Kenny to arrive in the WWE but right now, January twenty nineteen is as perfect as it may ever get.

Reason NOT to Sign – Where is Truly the Right Home?

While there is no denying there are many amazing opportunities up on the main roster of the WWE for Kenny Omega there is also a discussion about whether RAW or Smackdown LIVE is truly the right home for the former champion. With NXT currently consisting of the likes of Ricochet, Adam Cole, Keith Lee, Aleister Black, Ciampa, and Matt Riddle could NXT be in fact the right place for Omega to settle into? We also must look at what else is awaiting Omega outside of the WWE so many promotions still around for Omega to continue making an impact in and with indie talent he could step in the ring with and create even greater magic.

Reason TO Sign – The Doors That Open

The thought of Kenny Omega signing with the WWE is an exciting one for it opens so many potential doors. Increasing the chances of the likes of the Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes signing, Bullet Club work with the WWE and all the potential storylines we could so easily see happen. Omega signing is more than just him signing with the company it creates an opportunity for more top names to arrive in and back in the WWE assuring in a whole new feel to the company and increasing the quality of wrestling we see from the WWE.

Reason NOT to Sign – The Austin Aries Story

When thinking about the chance of Omega signing and the downsides, I straight away take a look back at Austin Aries. The news of Aries signing just a few years back was huge and most certainly very exciting. The hottest free agent on the scene, Aries was a man with all the experience, traveled the world, held titles everywhere and faced some of the best names in the business, however, things just never quite worked out in the WWE. Including his time NXT, despite the high expectations from fans and Aries being… Austin Aries he never truly made the impact he should have and there will forever be a concern that Omega could follow in those footsteps. Considering who Omega is and where he is in his career it can appear unlikely, he will find himself in the same position but is it really crazy to think he could?

He COULD Because – The Bullet Club History

The Evolution of Bullet Club has been interesting, and we take a look back at recent years its names including Anderson and Gallows, Balor, and Styles who have made the transition from NJPW/Bullet Club Stars to WWE talent and the chances of Omega following in their footsteps seems pretty inevitable. The move appears to be the sensible next decision but looking at history…it makes the argument even stronger!

Reason NOT to Sign – Motivation

It’s important to remember that Kenny Omega has made his motivation and intentions clear throughout his wrestling career. While signing with the WWE promises greater exposer, better merchandise sales, and more money Omega has never been a name we know to be motivated by money if so he would have signed with the WWE long before now and with the main focus being making an impact in wrestling and being the best in the world will Omega really make the huge jump to a entertainment heavy company so focused on Money meaning potential big changes to character, booking, and ring time?

Reason TO Sign – The New Era and Cementing a Legacy

And finally, it was very recently that the WWE announced things would be changing. They would be listening to fans more, paying attention and making big changes most certainly noticeable. One of the biggest changes the WWE must making moving forward is focusing heavily on wrestling over entertainment and as we have mentioned already in this post Omega brings both to the table, but his wrestling skill is something the WWE would massively benefit from in this process of change and improvement. His Signing ensures that we get to see more strong quality wrestling, greater chance of five-star matches and a focus on in-ring skill over big storylines. Arriving in the WWE also ensures that Omega completely establishes and cements himself as the best in the world today. It’s one of the final steps for him to tackle and allows him to attract a much wider audience, grow his fan base and achieve a level of success that could one day match the likes of the Rock and Stone Cold.

To conclude, I have mixed feelings, I would love to see Omega sign with the WWE for the dream matches and potential storyline’s we could see as well as what it does for his name going forward, however, I do have my concerns. I’d love to witness Kenny and Styles go head to head at mania which could so easily happen this year if he was to debut at the Rumble but with history involving so many top stars, there are many reasons Omega should stay far away from the WWE.
