Nine Biggest Losers and Winners from SummerSlam Weekend 2018

This past weekend was a huge one for the wrestling world with the WWE airing NXT Takeover Brooklyn four along with the second biggest pay per view of the year, SummerSlam. The two shows both provided fans with genuine strong content that left everyone totally invested, amazed, with plenty to discuss. I have already uploaded full reviews for each show, however, today we are bringing our attention back to SummerSlam weekend as we look at some of the biggest losers and winners from the show! With so many names to get through let’s not waste any more time!

Special Mentions to:
Seth Rollins
Carmella
Dolph Ziggler
AJ Styles
Ronda Rousey

Winner: Moustache Mountain

One of the best matches of the SummerSlam weekend this year came from the NXT tag team division as the Undisputed Era defended their titles against Moustache Mountain. The previous bouts involving these teams have gone down as some of the best of the year so far but their most recent was most certainly their best. While Bate and Seven failed to walk out as champions they were the men no one could stop talking about. Their brilliant chemistry and teamwork were displayed perfectly but the phenomenal in-ring skill they showcased was on another level. The two may not have gold around their waists but this performance will go down as a year highlight and there is no denying that the two have a huge future ahead of them.

Winner: Becky Lynch

The Smackdown LIVE Women’s championship triple threat match was honestly far better than I ever could have expected. There was always some form of high expectation considering Charlotte, Becky, and Carmella all brought something completely different to the table but overall the action was far stronger than I thought it would be. The biggest talking point, however, came from what we saw after the match. With Charlotte Flair being crowned the brand-new champion Lynch finally snapped and attacked her “best friend” moments after her huge victory. This was such an important moment for Becky who had clearly had an amazing performance throughout the match and told a story; the crowd reaction spoke volumes with a sold-out arena cheering for her the entire time. The attack was done right and timed perfectly and the next few months look very interesting for the lass kicker.

Loser: Kevin Owens

While I personally do believe that the squash match idea between Kevin Owens and Braun Strowman was the right booking decision I can totally see why so many people were not happy. Owens should have had a better showing and to have such a short time in the ring did him no favors on one of the biggest stages of the year. Things can easily turn around for him, but this wasn’t a good weekend for Owens.

Winner: The Bludgeon Brothers

A DQ ending may not have been the way many wanted to see the Smackdown LIVE tag team match conclude but in reality, this was clearly the strongest way to end this match. The New Day vs the Bludgeon brothers had so much potential to be a show stealer and in the time they had, they gave us plenty to be entertained by. It would have been nice to see a solid, clean ending but getting themselves DQ’d was exactly the direction needed. We now have more of a story to go on and Harper and Rowan had a standout moment that had people talking about them. The two are massively underrated and their performance this weekend showed just how amazing and talented they truly are.

Winner: Shayna Baszler

Losing the NXT Women’s Championship may not have been ideal, but this past Saturday Shayna Baszler arguably competed in her best wrestling match to date. Facing Kairi Sane always promised a good match for Baszler as the two have history and decent chemistry. We know the two can work a solid match after what we saw from them at last year’s Mae Young Classic, but the pair topped that massively this past Saturday. Baszler told a brilliant story, was massively convincing and worked her best in-ring match up to date!

Winner: Velveteen Dream

While his ring gear may have been one of the biggest talking points of the weekend (in some cases not for the best of reasons) the Velveteen Dream has given fans way more to talk about after his huge victory over EC3. The match between the two was a true showcase of egos and made for a character filled, entertaining, and damn strong wrestling match but there was no denying the Dream massively needed this victory and after his performance, the ring gear, and the win he truly did walk out of SummerSlam weekend as one of the biggest winners.

Winner: Samoa Joe

Arguably one of the biggest standouts/winners of the entire SummerSlam weekend was, of course, Samoa Joe. His WWE championship match against AJ Styles was easily one of the best matches of the night as expected but the character work and storytelling we saw from the former NXT champion was simply pure perfection. Hardcore fans always talk of wanting more personal, realistic, and intense rivalries and performances and Samoa Joe provided exactly that. The work between Joe and Styles is of course far from over after Joe directly confronted Styles’ daughter and wife and his performance this Sunday has truly heated things up!

Loser: Baron Corbin

Things are not as good as they could be for Baron Corbin right now. His new role is something he does genuinely work well and convincingly yet his momentum is low, and the general interest is weak. This past Sunday the former lone wolf failed to make any kind of Impact at the SummerSlam pay per view. Balor was the total main attraction and Corbin was simply there to give the demon a quick and easy victory. Unlike Owens, it does feel as though things are more difficult for Corbin and the chances of seeing his luck turn around are rather slim.

Winner: Dean Ambrose

And to conclude today’s blog post we, of course, have to talk about Dean Ambrose. While he didn’t compete in a match this past Sunday he remained one of the most talked about superstars of the night. Standing at ringside for his friend Seth Rollins’ IC title match, the lunatic evened up the numbers keeping McIntyre at the distance needed. He had his own little standout moments, but many picked up on the changes he has made to his character and mannerisms that have left us all wondering just when will we see his inevitable heel turn. Ambrose genuinely left fans on the edge of their seats and it made for brilliant viewing.

And those were some of the biggest winners and losers from this years SummerSlam pay per view. As always I would love to know what you think so feel free to leave a comment below or tweet me over at @TezangiVictoria😊
