Current NXT Superstars John Cena Should Challenge

In recent weeks there has been plenty discussion amongst the wrestling community regarding sixteen-time world champion, John Cena and his current role within the WWE. Adopting a part-time run it’s evident Cena now has a different position on the roster and a key part of that position involves molding the future of the company which effectively means putting over brand new talent. The Black and Yellow brand is home of the future of the WWE. It’s here talent are made into future world champions and so it’s no surprise two and two have been put together and many have begun to discuss whether Cena should play a greater role down in developmental. In today’s blog post we are going to be looking five current NXT stars we would love to see Cena face off against in must-see matches that will both elevate the careers of these up and comers and further push Cena’s legacy.

THIS POST WAS PRE POSTED OVER A MONTH AGO

EC3

Since his return to the WWE, there has been plenty of talk of a future match between John Cena and former Impact star EC3. The pair has both teased a match between them and its one many fans have made clear is something they want to see! I myself would love to witness a showdown between an all-time great in Cena and one of the most promising stars on the scene right now in EC3. Both sporting a very different attitude the story of the young, cocky up and comer with a lot to prove challenging one of the best of all time is one to invest in, evidently clear their characters would bounce off one another amazingly. EC3 is no rookie, he has plenty of experience and a history with the company and that’s something that could play such a key part in their story. Promos involving Cena telling EC3 to pace himself and to drop the attitude could make for more standout mic work at the hands of John while this also gives EC3 the chance to show off on the mic himself and take center stage. This would make for an excellent “passing the torch” kind of story and match and with their styles and the potential build, we could get this could very easily result in being a decade standout.

Adam Cole

John Cena is no stranger to taking on a dominant faction and attempting to eliminate a threatening team taking over the WWE; just look at the likes of Nexus, The Shield, and the Wyatt Family as examples. With this in mind, the leader of the Cenation coming to blows with the leader of the Undisputed era is something many can sure invest in. This is most certainly a match I can see taking place at some point in the future whether if it happens in NXT or up on the main roster. Adam Cole is one heck of a talent with a very bright future ahead of him and the idea of the Undisputed era is one that has potential to skyrocket and make an impact similar to other dominant factions in the past including Legacy, the Shield, and NWO. If the WWE does push these guys on that kind of scale, we can sure expect to see John rush in to save the day and there is no denying we can get some great action between Adam Cole and Cena. Cole has made a name for himself working fantastic matches against multiple different opponents and adding Cena to that list is something I know I can sure get excited about!

Pete Dunne

From the moment the first WWE United Kingdom Championship tournament launched it was made clear that Pete Dunne has an extremely bright future ahead of him. One of the longest reigning champions in recent years, several memorable matches, and a slot on an episode of Monday night RAW, Pete Dunne is the most promising star of the UK division, in fact, Triple H himself has said he believes Dunne will be WWE champion one day. With all that in mind, a contest between one of the best heels in the business today and the ultimate babyface is something the WWE will not want to pass on. Dunne is a whole different kind of opponent. He knows exactly how to get into his opponent's heads as does Cena however, Dunne isn’t afraid to push the boundaries and break the rules whenever and however he pleases, and his ruthless, carefree, cocky attitude makes him a brilliant opponent for John Cena. As the youngest star to feature in this list it really would speak volumes if Pete was to collide with Cena over the next couple of years and there is no doubt in my mind that that match would make for a damn good must see!

Johnny Gargano

While a future story between Johnny Gargano and John Cena may not be as strong as something we would see between the sixteen-time world champion and the names we have mentioned above this has the potential to be the best match of the bunch. With two five star rated matches under his belt in under a year Gargano is arguably the best wrestler in the WWE today. Consistent, passionate, excellent in the ring, and a damn good storyteller Gargano reminds many of talent including Daniel Bryan and Cesaro, both of which who have previously worked fantastic memorable matches against Cena. Gargano is the type of talent we could see follow in the footsteps of Kevin Owens and work three straight standout matches against John and is the guy on today’s list I believe has the potential to score a real five-star match against the future Hall of Famer.

Velveteen Dream

And finally, the man who inspired this blog post in the first place, the Velveteen Dream. One of the best all-around performers the WWE has right now, the Velveteen Dream is exactly what NXT represents and continues to prove the future of the WWE is in safe hands. A very unique and captivating character, Dream has won over the NXT universe thanks to his brilliant character work and amazing in-ring competition in matches against the likes of Aleister Black, Johnny Gargano, and more recently Ricochet. We’ve seen Triple H speak very highly about the former Tough Enough competitor and has been a name popping up whenever there has been discussion regarding who Cena should face if he was to focus more on the NXT roster. The Dream is yet to score a big win and a contest against Cena and the win could elevate him to new heights but also reassure fans the WWE has big plans for him. He impressed massively at NXT Takeover Chicago II and we can expect a bright future regardless but the more you think about it the more this becomes a dream match!

And that is my list! In the coming weeks, I will be talking about Cena and the chances of him working more with the NXT talent so keep an eye out for those! For now, make sure to get involved and join the conversation tweeting me at @TezangiVictoria or leave a comment below telling me who you would add to this list!
