Seven Things We Must See at SummerSlam 2018

This weekend the WWE has lined up an interesting Summer Slam card. With Ronda Rousey set to take on Alexa Bliss in a must-see RAW Women’s Championship match along with a dream WWE bout between AJ Styles and Samoa Joe along with a controversial main event there is plenty left for fans to talk about and many reasons to tune in. However, with that being said, I have to be honest and admit that this is the least excited I’ve personally been for a Summer Slam pay per view and I’ve been pretty disappointed with the overall feel! In today’s blog post I’m going to attempt, however, to add a little more excitement and discuss the five things that must happen this Sunday in order to have a successful twenty eighteen Summer Slam pay per view.

Ronda Rousey Must Become Champion

Okay, I’m pretty sure this one is likely to divide opinion considering Ronda herself has divided opinion amongst the WWE universe from day one. Since her arrival in the company, it’s been evident that it's only a matter of time before she achieves champion success and with this Sunday marking her second championship matchup most are confident she will finally walk out with the title around her waist. Now, Alexa has made for a damn good champion despite also dividing fans. She’s been given plenty of opportunities and has remained firmly in the spotlight for the past two years, this Sunday however, it's vital that Rousey makes her mark and takes hold of the possession she was always meant to own. I’m confident these two could, In fact, work a decent match and I’m hoping the WWE give them long enough to allow Bliss to prove critiques wrong however overall, this is Ronda’s night and for things to move forward for the division and for Rousey she must walk out the new champ.

Cruiserweight Spotlight

While I may still struggle to call myself a Loyal 205 Live viewer it's no secret that the show has improved massively, and the overall standard has increased greatly. The wrestling provided on a weekly basis is fantastic and still clearly underrated. This weekend Cedric Alexander will do battle with Drew Gulak in what has potential to be a true standout of the weekend. These are by far two of the best in-ring performers in the WWE today and their lack of exposure it's actually very disappointing. This up and coming Sunday it's important that the cruiserweights get the in-ring time they deserve and this championship bout and these superstars get the time and attention they deserve.

Cut the Crap

I’ve mentioned it in several other blog posts recently but less really is more and this weekend fans can expect one damn long pay per view. This means there will be matches on the card that don’t grab fan attention as much nor have fans as interested and it's important the WWE keep these matches short and sweet. Corbin vs Balor is a prime example. They have proven they can at least deliver a decent matchup but on the Summer Slam card this isn’t the match that is bringing in the fans and its best to keep this one short and give extra time to those bouts with more potential such as Styles vs Joe and the Cruiserweight Championship match.

Becky Lynch’s Heel Turn

For those who have followed me for a while, you will know that I’ve never truly been the worlds biggest Becky Lynch fan. I still believe her best in-ring performance was a singles bout against Sasha Banks at a Takeover event several years back. She has remained a key part in the women’s evolution and for sure had her standout moments, but its clear Lynch has been overshadowed by other talents. This weekend is an important one for Becky. We’ve seen throughout the build-up to this Championship match that Lynch is growing with frustration at Charlotte forever taking the spotlight. This Sunday we have to see these women work a standout matchup but also the focus has to be strongly on Lynch. This means if Charlotte gets the win then Lynch attacks, breaks down and finally loses it. Or its simple, the WWE put the title on Becky, an end result many want to see.

Cash in…Anyone…Cash In

I’ve got to say it… I have zero, literally no interest what so ever in the WWE Universal Championship match between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar. I wish I could sit here and say that something has changed my mind, that I have some form of interest, but I honestly don’t. I’ve grown bored of their bouts, I’m bored of Lesnar’s reign, and I’m bored of Roman being in the spotlight. I still believe Lashley should have had this spot and I do struggle to believe this is going to be a standout match. Of course, there’s a good solid story behind it and clear potential but I strongly feel as though the way to turn things around is a cash in regardless of the end result. Whether it be Owens or Strowman, this is how the WWE save this match and possibly the overall feel fans will be left with come the end of the night. Strowman has been worthy of this spot for a long time and deserves to walk out as champion but a big twist in Owens walking out the new champ could really shake things up.

Turning on Seth Rollins

There is simply no denying the fact that turning Ambrose heel is exactly what the WWE need to do. Sure, he works as a decent baby face but throughout his career outside of the WWE, Ambrose shone brightly in the role of the crazy bad guy and this return opens opportunities for the WWE to give Ambrose the heel push so many fans have been waiting for for years not to mention the timing is beyond perfect. For months now, Seth Rollins has been established as one of the biggest and best babyfaces in the WWE today. He’s hard work, consistency, and place on the roster has enabled fans to truly grasp onto the idea that he is one of the key figures they tune into RAW every single week to watch. At one of the highest and most over points of his career, it would make for perfect storytelling to see Ambrose turn on his friend at one of the biggest stages of them all.

Summer Slam will be a huge night for the architect and the story that the WWE has told throughout the past couple of months has put more emphasis on the fact that Rollins needs to have a strong night at this year’s Summer Slam event. Ambrose running in the moment and turning on him would be huge and exactly what he needs. The two haa ve huge history and there really is no better time for the WWE to turn Ambrose heel than right now.

Let Them Takeover

And finally, as always, the WWE main roster is set to be under serious pressure come Sunday having to follow the NXT Takeover show on Saturday. There are so many dream matches taking place and the stars of RAW and Smackdown Will have a lot to follow! However, the Summer Slam card itself has some true gems and so many bouts that could easily go down as highlights of the entire year, all the WWE need to do is give those matches the time and let these stars shine. It’s matchups including Rollins vs Ziggler, the Smackdown LIVE tag Team championship bout, and Styles vs Joe that must be given the spotlight and time they deserve and if that is provided then this could be remembered as a true standout pay per view of the year.

As I said in the intro, I’m not as excited for this pay per view as I would have liked to have been or as much as I usually am but as we’ve touched on today, there is a lot of potential and with the right booking and structure this could be a huge success. As always, I would love to know what you guys think so feel free to leave a comment below or tweet me over at @TezangiVictoria telling me what your thoughts are on the up and coming PPV.
