What The Build to WWE Evolution Should Have Done

This weekend the WWE will once again make history in the efforts to further push women’s wrestling to a much stronger position with the first ever all women’s WWE pay per view taking place. Must see title bouts, returns, and appearances from legends, the night promises some excellent all-around content but there is also no denying the simple yet clear fact that the build to this massively important event has been incredibly weak and disappointing with a lazy card left in comparison to what could have been. In today’s blog post we are going to be listing five things the Evolution should have provided fans with and the big missed opportunities!

Redemption for Sasha Banks

In a couple of weeks’ time, I will be uploading a blog post looking at where exactly things went wrong for former women’s champion, Sasha Banks, but the woman herself remains a focal point today in the opening of this special little article. The moment Evolution was announced Sasha Banks was a name I first thought of, imagining dream matches and storyline’s I desperately wanted to see her apart of now that a major door had been opened. From collisions with the likes of Legends such as Trish Stratus to the re-match the WWE universe have been waiting for since their days in NXT, Sasha Banks VS Bayley was too a favourite to take place on this night, however, fans have once again been left disappointed with how the Boss has in fact been booked.

It was the Evolution PPV that opened a major door for Sasha after a solid year of struggling to sit firmly in the position she belongs in over on the main roster; this historic event would have allowed the Boss to remind fans of why that is indeed her nickname, work a match the takes us back to the days she was apart of bouts that made this Evolution and perform within the role she plays best, the cocky heel. I still do strongly believe Sunday could see the start of a big turn around for the Boss however, there is no denying she is one of the main talents massively failed!

Introducing Tag Team Titles

One of the announcements I was confident fans would witness during the build of the Evolution pay per view was the reveal of tag team titles within the women’s division. The WWE has spent the better part of a year building what looks to be a women’s tag team division from calling up the IIConics to keeping the likes of the Riott Squad and Absolution together leaving many to believe shiny new belts were on their way. Again, I do believe that at some point soon the WWE will introduce these championships for the women’s division, however, failing to in fact do that for this historic PPV is a big missed opportunity! With legends such as Michelle McCool returning and Women’s Evolution focus points (yes I believe that to be a true fact) The Bella Twins also making a comeback, it’s a clear women’s tag team division could be built, a tournament ending with the first champions being crowned at Evolution is yet another amazingly historic moment that could have and should have taken place at this event.

Dream Matches

Over fifty women are set to be apart of the historic Evolution pay per view from the likes of Trish Stratus, Alundra Blayze, Lita, and Michelle McCool amongst those names and so the dream matches were endless! Whether it be old fumes such as Trish vs Mickie or the future vs the icons such as Trish vs Sasha Banks, it's massively clear the WWE could have so easily put on an array of must-see dream contests that would have sold tickets quick! It, of course, will be an excellent and special moment seeing these women partake in this historic event but the dream matches they could have been a part of and what those bouts could have done for the PPV and the Evolution movement is something on a different scale.

Saving Asuka

Since losing to Charlotte Flair at Wrestlemania earlier this year things haven’t looked the best for former NXT Women’s champion Asuka. Despite making history by becoming the first ever winner of an all-women’s Royal Rumble match Asuka has somehow faded into the background a sentence a year ago would have seemed impossible to write. Once considered to be one of the most dominant and important women in WWE history, Asuka now struggled to find herself involved in anything remotely serious and interesting and so Evolution was truly an opportunity to change that and remind fans of the dominant force the Empress of Tomorrow truly is. Dream matches against legends such as Lita or collisions with former foes including Nikki Cross all could of and would have massively helped push Asuka back to the top or at least a far stronger position, saving her from a rollercoaster of a year.

To Showcase the Best of Smackdown LIVE’s Female Stars

While the Smackdown LIVE women’s championship match between Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch is one of the most anticipated bouts on the Evolution card with the rivalry noted as one of if not the greatest main roster feud right now there really isn’t much else allowing the female stars of the blue brand to truly standout. This historic pay per view was a great opportunity for these women who really have gone massively underutilized for a long time. The likes of Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville, The IIConics, Naomi, and Asuka are amongst those whom should have been booked far stronger on this night, but the bigger picture further pushes this idea that the Smackdown LIVE women’s division isn’t used as well or viewed as important as the females of Monday night RAW. Becky and Charlotte can be apart of one of the best matches of the entire year, but the overall image and perspective of the blue brand's female talent aren’t greatly affected in the slightest.

And that is today’s blog post! There were plenty more points I wanted to make today, and this post has inspired many other articles I want to work on in the coming weeks so keep an eye out for that! I will be live tweeting throughout Evolution so make sure you’re following me over at @TezangiVictoria and of course, any recent blog posts will be linked below!
