Who Should Become the New NXT Champion?

With NXT Favourite and now former champion Tommaso Ciampa out of action due to undergoing neck surgery there is great discussion regarding who will step forward and become crowned the new NXT Champion. With the black and gold brand full of elite talent the options are endless and in today’s blog post we are going to be discussing just a few potential title holders we could see in a matter of months.

Adam Cole

Looking online it came as no surprise to see Adam Cole’s name pop up left right and centre when the topic of who should be crowned the new NXT champion arises. He is without a shadow of a doubt one of the biggest fan favourites regarding this topic with so many wishing to see the former North American champion take hold of the most prestigious title on the black and gold brand. His win would see Cole make history by becoming the first superstar to hold both these titles and with the Undisputed Era needing something new and exciting this fits the bill perfectly. There is almost no reason why he shouldn’t become the new NXT Champion.

Velveteen Dream

While he may be the current North American Champion as I am writing this Velveteen, Dream is too another big-time fan favourite when discussing who should become the new NXT title holder. Dream has grown to become one of the most over, likeable, and entertaining stars not only in NXT but the WWE as a whole and fans are completely behind him in every step of his career. Dream would make for a truly amazing and unique NXT Champion but seeing him with gold already around his waist it seems unlikely he will get the win but instead come close but then again… what is stopping him from holding both at the same time?

Pete Dunne

Keeping on the theme of current champions we next have the reigning NXT UK Champion, Pete Dunne. Now, Dunne has held this title for a very long time and fans have speculated he will soon drop the title likely to newcomer WALTER. An angle I saw recently that left me needing to include Dunne in this list indicated that he could drop the title to Walter during Mania weekend to be crowned the NXT Champion on the same night. Of course, this appears rather far fetched but it's an exciting thought to have and with Dunne making an impact for both NXT and NXT UK I doubt there would be many upset fans after this win/booking.

Ricochet

Up next is, of course, Ricochet. Now, despite spending the last few weeks working on both RAW and Smackdown LIVE and making his WWE PPV debut, Ricochet remains a favourite amongst many in the discussion of who should become the next NXT Champion. Ricochet, of course, has all the needed attributes from popularity, unique skill, and the ability to bring something very new and exciting to the NXT Championship. I don’t personally feel as though there is a demanding role for Ricochet right now on the main roster so it could be a great time for him to capture the NXT title but it may just be a little too late.

Keith Lee

Keith Lee may not be my personal favourite or the superstar I’m rooting for in terms of becoming the new NXT Champion, but I cannot deny he makes for an excellent pick! Full charisma, experience, and popularity amongst the NXT Universe, Keith Lee would make for one pretty damn awesome NXT Champion. Since his arrival, we have seen partake in some great singles matches but we now wait to see him go up a level and bring even more to the table. We want to see more from him, see him pushed harder, and becoming NXT champion will show friends just how big of a star Lee is and the direction the WWE is taking him in moving forward. This is an opportunity Keith Lee may never have gotten at this time.

Johnny Gargano

And the last name I had to mention Is, of course, Johnny Gargano. Looking at things from a storyline perspective it makes all the sense in the world for Johnny Gargano to go on to become the new NXT Champion. We know that Gargano has been spending a lot of time on RAW and Smackdown LIVE recently but Gargano remaining on NXT for a little longer for the chance to get his hands on this title just seems to work. Now, I know why the WWE would want to move Gargano away from the NXT championship and away from this story, but it would be such a special and feel good moment to see Gargano finally capture the NXT Championship. It’s a well-deserved moment that could so easily go down in as an all-time best.
