Who Will be the Next North American Champion?

One of my favourite title changes of the year so far was the night that saw the Velveteen Dream defeat Johnny Gargano to become the new North American Champion. Dream has completely won over fans, competed in an array of standout matches and become one of the biggest and best NXT stars on the roster today proving to be a major element of the future of the WWE. Talking of the future, while Dream is still early into his reign as champion the NXT roster continues to grow and so in today’s blog post we are going to be looking at some of the potential future North American champions who could knock the Dream out of his spotlight.

Matt Riddle

With the Dream finding himself recently involved in the early stages of a growing rivalry with Matt Riddle it's no surprising he is featuring first in today’s blog post. The two have already engaged in segments and promos and it’s clear the pair are strikingly different from their image to what they represent but in terms of in-ring skill it's evident that if the pair were to share a ring together some truly amazing work could take place! Both superstars have been highlighted as major fan favourites and their fantastic wrestling ability is no secret making a one on one between them a true dream. Riddle has already been massively impressive since his debut and while other superstars may have a better chance at becoming NXT champion the North American Championship may be around his waist very soon!

Roderick Strong

Roderick Strong has a very interesting and entertaining run over on the black and gold brand so far. From his early days finding his feet to the heel turn that saw him join the Undisputed Era and go from strength to strength. His alliance with Adam Cole and co has already seen Strong capture NXT tag team gold but moving forward the North American championship may be in his sights. We have seen Velveteen collide with the Undisputed era in the past and it’s no secret there is history between the Dream and the faction with tensions clear; with that in mind, Strong going one on one with Dream and becoming champion in the near future doesn’t seem very far fetched at all. With Cole a favourite to become NXT champion and O’Riley and Bobbie Fish remaining in the tag team scene it leaves Roderick in need of something fresh and this appears to be the perfect set up.

Dominik Dijakvoic

Dominik Dijakvoic is a man who really has grabbed mine and everyone else in the NXT universe’s attention in recent months. The WWE has done a fantastic job in booking the newcomer who has adapted to the NXT lifestyle perfectly! A dominant performance week in and week out, an intense and intimidating image and fantastic/impressive in-ring skills, this is a man destined for great things and screams future champion. I have no doubt in my mind that Dominik could so easily make for an amazing NXT champion but with the scene so full as of right now it appears as though chasing after the North American championship is the best option for him! I believe Dream could bring out Dijakvoic’s best WWE match to date if the two were to collide and I do feel as though he would make for a great superstar to dethrone Velveteen down the line bringing something completely new to this championship.

Jaxson Ryker

The rise of the Forgotten Sons is something the WWE has really been focusing on in recent weeks and I have to admit that it’s come as a surprise. I’m yet to be fully convinced and won over by this faction but the originality is something I can most certainly get behind and I do see that there is potential. Jaxson Ryker is a man I have been watching outside of the WWE for a while now and I know for a fact he is a very experienced and talented wrestler with loads to bring to the table and looking to be the leader of the Forgotten Sons I would love to see the WWE go ahead with the controversial decision to pull off a shock victory over Dream somewhere down the line to become the new North American champion. Now, this is a decision sure to piss off a few fans but in a way, I believe it’s that reaction that makes me want to see this happen even more. His win would be very out of the blue and a risk but with so much to bring to the table, it’s a booking decision I could get behind!

And those are just four potential opponents who could dethrone Velveteen Dream in the near future! Of course, there were other names I considered while writing this but I really wanted to bring something different and mention a couple of names I don’t get to talk about all too much here on my blog but I would love to know who you would have included in this list so feel free to leave a comment below or tweet me over at @TezangiVictoria.
