Top 10 WWE Matches of the Year So Far (part 1)

Two thousand and eighteen has so far seen some excellent matches take place. The WWE finally received a five-star rating from Dave Meltzer after five years and NXT has once again been the home of some of the best wrestling in the world today. Now, in wrestling as a whole we have truly been treated to some fantastic matches we sure will be talking about for years to come but this week we will be focusing our attention solely on the WWE as we count down the ten best WWE Matches of the year so far. This post I usually upload in June, but I was so busy last month I just didn’t have the time! The matches we will be talking about his week will span from January to June. December will, of course, see the big “Match of the year” post uploaded but for now, let’s dive into part one of this week’s special top ten list!

10. Sasha Banks vs Alexa Bliss vs Natalya vs Ember Moon

Looking online I haven’t seen many people include this match in their list of favourite matches of the year so far but for me personally, this had to make the list today. By far one of the best women’s matches we have seen from the WWE over past six months, four of the brightest stars on the RAW roster came together to compete in arguably the best fatal four way from the division since the four horsewomen showdown a few years back at NXT Takeover. With Nattie, Bliss, Moon, and Banks set to compete in the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match all four women looked to gain extra momentum ahead of one of the biggest matches of their careers and despite a ladder match day’s away these women competed in a lengthy, intense, and fast-paced match that put them all through their paces. This was Embers best overall performance to date, Bliss showed why she’s one of the best and smartest superstars/characters in the division, Banks had her moment and Natalya picked up a much-needed win. It was difficult to point out who was going to get the win with the action being so close but over all this was a must-see contest and a highlight in the WWE Women’s division so far this year.

9. The Miz vs Seth Rollins

In previous blog posts (and tweets) I have mentioned that the Miz is by far one of the best talkers in WWE history. His character is a forever standout and it has been amazing to see such a shift in his career and position on the roster over the past couple of years. But only a couple of months back the Miz proved himself in the ring when he went one on one with Seth Rollins for the Intercontinental championship. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting all too much from this match at all, in fact I was expecting to see a rather short contest where Miz brought character, but Rollins carried the wrestling, however, the two worked amazingly well together and the Miz took part one of the greatest matches of his entire career. The action was intense, at times hard to call, and the Miz held his own so brilliantly against one of the best in-ring performers in the WWE today.

8. Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch vs The Undisputed Era

Just a heads up, you can expect to see plenty of NXT matches mentioned throughout the two lists uploaded this week and I’m confident that will not come as a surprise. The NXT roster has been on fire once again and the tag team division has continued to stand out and raise the bar. It was back at last months NXT Takeover: Chicago live Special we saw that very point proven when the Undisputed era defended their NXT Tag Team Titles against Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch. The biggest match of Lorcan and Burche’s career these two did not waste a single second and while they didn’t score the victory and walk out as champs they put O’Riley and Roderick Strong throw their paces. Bumps that made you gasp, hard hits, close calls, and all round excellent wrestling, this was a highlight of these four superstar’s careers, NXT, and pro wrestling so far this year.

7. Men’s Royal Rumble

Correct me if wrong but I’m pretty sure I’ve never included a Royal Rumble match in my top ten matches of the year for any year so far but twenty eighteen is most certainly the time to change that. Back in January the men Royal Rumble was highlighted by many as one of the best of all time. While it was disappointing to see a lack of surprise entrants an NXT stars take part we did at least see Adam Cole, Andrade Cien Almas, and Rey Mysterio show up throughout the match as entrants and shake things up massively. Rey’s surprise return for the night has remained one of the best moments of the year so far but the match as a whole provided fans with plenty of reasons as to why they should mark this as one of the best of all time. The closing moments between Reigns and Nakamura left everyone on edge and Shinsuke’s win was by far one of the most satisfying moments…ever.

6. Nia Jax vs Ronda Rousey

We recently touched on one of the best matches from the WWE women’s division so far this year but up next is my personal favourite women’s matches to come from the WWE so far without a doubt. Nia Jax vs Ronda Rousey was a contest we all expected to see take place at some point. I myself spent plenty of time predicting this match in several blog posts but no one could have predicted just how good their collision was. The build, in my opinion, could have been much much better but what we saw go down at Money in the Bank was simply fantastic. Nia played her part perfectly. She’s the veteran in this match, she’s dominant, the champion, and has the height and weight advantage and she did dominate a good chunk of this match but Rousey had fight and determination and was able to battle through one heck of a beating. The match overall was intense, had fans genuinely hooked from start to finish and Bliss’ cash in only contributed to why this is such a major WWE standout so far this year.

And that was part one! Part two of this post will be uploaded later this week! For now, any recent blog post will be linked below and you can let me know what your WWE match of the year has been so far by leaving a comment below or by tweeting me over at @TezangiVictoria.
