Top 10 WWE Matches of The Year So Far (Part 2)

Two thousand and eighteen has so far seen some excellent matches take place. The WWE finally received a five-star rating from Dave Meltzer after five years and NXT has once again been the home of some of the best wrestling in the world today. Now, in wrestling as a whole we have truly been treated to some fantastic matches we sure will be talking about for years to come but this week we will be focusing our attention solely on the WWE as we count down the ten best WWE Matches of the year so far. This post I usually upload in June, but I was so busy last month I just didn’t have the time! The matches we will be talking about his week will span from January to June. December will, of course, see the big “Match of the year” post uploaded but for now, let’s dive into part one of this week’s special top ten list!

5) Velveteen Dream vs Ricochet

Just a heads up, part two of this blog post will consist of plenty NXT Matches so brace yourself! First up today we have a contest I’m sure will not surprise anyone to see make the list as we head back to NXT Takeover Chicago and the one on one bout between Velveteen Dream and Ricochet. Destined to always be a show stealer and the two did not disappoint. A slightly slower start but the pace of the match did increase and as a result get a lot better and the spots performed highlighted Ricochet and Dream as two of the best not only in NXT but pro wrestling as a whole today. The pair worked amazingly well together and the athletism from both men was simply fantastic. Dream was able to keep up with the pace of Ricochet and fit in some damn near close calls but in the end, it was the King who was able to score a victory over the prince but after such a strong performance its pretty much impossible to call one of these two the loser.

4) Triple H & Stephanie McMahon vs Ronda Rousey and Kurt Angle

If you had told me at the start of the year that this match would go down as one of the best of twenty eighteen I’m not sure I would have believed a single word, however, fast forward to July and it’s evident this is proving to be a tough main roster match to top. Rousey making her in-ring debut was always sure to be a must see and everyone had divided opinions in regard to what exactly we would see from her in that very much to the surprise of many she performed amazingly well and impressed the WWE universe massively. Not only did she make Stephanie tap out (okay that may not be have been as difficult of a task) but she held her own taking out Triple H and performing at a level that most certainly did not scream out a rookie. Everyone played a part, the match was fun, easy to invest in and genuinely had fans on the edge of their seat. Far better than anyone could expect and a brilliant introduction to Ronda Rousey in the wrestling world.

3) North America Championship Ladder Match

As far as ladder matches go the North America Championship ladder match taking place during Wrestlemania weekend was by far one of the best ladder matches of all time. A bold statement, yes, but one I stand by one hundred percent! Completely star-studded it was the likes of up and comers including Lars Sullivan, Killian Dane, Velveteen Dream, Ricochet, Adam Cole and EC3 stood in the middle of the ring all looking to make history and become the first ever North America Champion and what a damn contest it was. Every single superstar stood out throughout this match with everyone having their “omg” moment. It was a turning point in the career of Lars Sullivan, an excellent debut for Ricochet and EC3 and names including Dream and Killian Dane proved an even bigger point. Full of gripping action, fantastic wrestling and the genuine unpredictable nature as to who would walk out the victor there is no denying this is by far one of the best WWE matches of twenty eighteen so far and holding everything you want in a ladder match, seeing another as good will prove to be very difficult.

2) Johnny Gargano vs Andrade Cien Almas

Okay, I know this is one sure to make the number one spot for many wrestling fans but for me personally, there was one match I enjoyed just that little more but, in all honesty, these two top matches are so amazing its difficult to truly believe either was better than the other. Taking place all the way back in January, Andrade Cien Almas out his title on the line against a very passionate Johnny Gargano in a true must-see contest. Rated five stars and the favourite of many this match left fans on the edge of their seat and it was evident come the end there really was nothing more these two could have done. This match had everything you could have asked for from excellent storytelling to wrestling at a level we don’t often see in the WWE. These two young and up and comers raised the bar extremely hard and have made it near impossible for anyone to work as good let alone better than this

1) Johnny Gargano vs Tommaso Ciampa (Street Fight)

Is there anyone in the WWE who has performed at a higher level than Johnny Gargano this year? I think not. Competing in two five star matches he is at the top of his game, however, the street fight between Gargano and Ciampa is a match I was massively surprised to see not given a five-star rating, but it most certainly tops my list! I know for many it was their unsanctioned match that makes their number one spot but for me it was the Street Fight we saw only last month that takes the top spot. This was exactly my kind of match and had everything you could ask for. This was a personal contest, a fight that was totally gripping, entertaining and full of storytelling from start to finish. Yet another phenomenal performance from both men and again, topping this is pretty much impossible.

And that is part two! So far we really have been treated to some amazing matches and I cannot wait to see what other bouts will be added to this list in December! As always, any recent blog posts will be linked below and you can get involved and tell me what your favourite WWE match of the year has been so far by leaving a comment or by tweeting me over at @TezangiVictoria.
