Five Negative Effects Brock Lesnars Title Reign Has Had

If you have been following me for long enough you will know that I haven’t ever truly been a fan of Brock Lesnar’s reign as Universal Champion or how the WWE has booked the beast in recent years for that matter. Throughout his reign as champion and throughout the past four years or so the WWE Universe have expressed their frustrations regarding Lesnar and his position in the company but what has his dominant reign as champion truly done to the main roster and how is it affected the championship, the superstars of today and the product as a whole in a negative manner?

Braun Strowman

Over the past couple of years, Braun Strowman has proven time and time again to be not only a man of serious potential but true championship worthy. This is a man who from head to toe represents exactly what a champion in the WWE should be, consistent, dominant, talented in the ring and full of charisma and likability. Able to work both as a heel and a babyface, Strowman has stood out massively in both roles and solid booking and storytelling has led him to come face to face with the beast several times. Now, when the conversation of exactly who should dethrone Lesnar has been brought up Strowman I a name that has popped up multiple times and the monster among men has come so close so many times that it has left fans beyond frustrated. The WWE has presented several perfect opportunities to kick start change and crown Strowman the new Universal Champion and present a passing of the torch but instead having him defeated by Brock on more than one occasion massively affected his momentum, story and journey and he has struggled to bounce back and have the same effect since.

Missed Opportunities

Lesnar’s reign as Universal Champion has been massively problematic in pushing future talent and giving them the opportunities, they truly deserve. Whether it be Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, Drew McIntyre or any other up and coming star, they have massively missed out on a chance to walk out champion because of the title holder. Of course, it was great to see Balor given the chance in January at the Royal Rumble to have a great showing against Lesnar but with the WWE so keen on keeping the title on Brock it has meant that so many superstars have gone without capturing gold when they deserve it and could of and probably would have if Lesnar had not been the title holder. So many superstars are currently walking around with less than they deserve and a little lost at times and Lesnar being champion hasn’t helped that at all. Not to mention that if a true fighting champion was currently what we had then more title opportunities for these stars would help their journeys and momentum.

Fan Opinion of the Championship

The Universal championship as of right now hasn’t got the best record nor the best of fan opinion. From Balor having to relinquish the championship less than twenty-four hours after capturing it, Reigns’ unpopular victory and Lesnar’s current reign it is a true struggle to have many positive things to say about this still very new championship. The problem with Lesnar’s reign, however, is just how strong that negative effect has been. The lack of title defences has at times made the title feel less important and while I have had my moments where I feel as though it has done the opposite effect, I’m now so  tired of seeing Brock as champion I have completely zero interest in the title altogether and I know for a fact I am not alone. Whoever does go onto become champion after Lesnar has some work to do in changing the general fan opinion of this championship and the interest behind it.

Repetitive Storylines

I will admit there have been several storyline’s throughout Lesnar’s recent reigns as champion that I have enjoyed. His history, background, dominance, and character means the WWE can create some truly awesome and entertaining storyline’s but it also means they are limited at times. More recently it has come to my attention that there has been a real lack of originality behind so many of his rivalries as champion. AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan, Finn Balor, and current challenger Seth Rollins have all adopted the role as the underdog. The much smaller former indie guy with all the heart and experience who eventually has fallen to the beast while the likes of Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns have looked to use their own dominance to match Lesnar yet too has fallen. Apart from these two angles the WWE have failed to create interesting and unique angles and as a result, every storyline has become predictable and provided the same build, same story, same promos and segments and to date, the exact same result.

The Wrestlemania Main Event

In all fairness, there have been moments where Lesnar hasn’t been exactly the main event at Wrestlemania despite being champion but when it comes to the title and the recent Mania title defences its hard to remember a Wrestlemania where Lesnar didn’t walk in and out as Champion. This has meant that for quite some time we have been provided with pretty much the same build and same Wrestlemania title defence and I have to admit I am beyond more. Tying into all my previous points, his reign as champion has meant the WWE championship hasn’t main evented when it should have (Randy Orton’s Royal Rumble win as a prime example) taking away the importance of the WWE championship but has also seen a lack of originality in title defences at the biggest event of the year.

As someone who has never been the worlds biggest Brock Lesnar fan its no surprise to see a rather negative blog post today but while Lesnar has had so many amazing moments, storyline’s and matches as champion his reign may have done more harm than good. Now, next week I’m going to be exploring five positive effects his reign has had so stay tuned for that but for now you can let me know what you think by leaving a comment below or by tweeting me over at @TezangiVictoria.
