Potential and Dream Opponents for Dean Ambrose After the WWE

With news recently breaking that former WWE Champion Dean Ambrose is set to leave the company after Wrestlemania in April discussions of his future have been strong amongst the wrestling community. With Ambrose far from shy of options away from the WWE an array of dream opponents are stepping forward in conversation. In today’s blog post I’m going to be looking at only a handful of dream and now possible opponents for Ambrose when he departs with the company in only a couple of months’ time.

Sami Callihan

Any long-time Dean Ambrose fan will remember the day of The Switchblade Conspiracy, and alliance between Sami Callihan and Dean Ambrose (known then as Jon Moxley). The pair worked as a hardcore duo breaking out in promotions such as CZW and became infamous for their gripping and edgy promos and storyline work. Fast forward to twenty nineteen and both superstars found themselves departing or departed with the WWE leaving wrestling fans desperate to see the pair reunite on the independent scene. Ambrose making an appearance for the likes of Impact Wrestling to challenge Callihan or even join OvE makes for the stuff of dreams but one thing remains certain; with these two both away from the WWE and having the past five years they have had some of the best storyline work of the two’s career could take place and one epic collision could shake the wrestling scene.

Eddie Edwards

Keeping on the theme of IMPACT stars, a match I have wanted to see take place for well over a year now is a collision between Eddie Edwards and of course, Dean Ambrose. With both men booked with the “crazy” gimmick and adopting roles in hardcore wrestling during their careers, there is no denying that when you put these two in the ring together some real magic could take place! I’ve mentioned before that I believe IMPACT Wrestling could be a very fitting home for Ambrose upon his departure with the WWE with so many dream matches awaiting him, however, topping that list of dream opponents alongside Callihan is, of course, Eddie Edwards.

Cody Rhodes

Okay, so this one is far more of a personal dream match that one that may be favoured by the majority of wrestling fans but I just had to include it in today’s blog post. With so many wanting to see Ambrose head over to AWE discussions on exactly who he could face down the line have been made and for me, Cody Rhodes was one of the first stars to pop into mind. While the two are strikingly different in terms of in-ring style and characters it’s that major difference that could make for something pretty damn special! Ambrose coming in as the rebellious newcomer looking to make his own rules and challenge the top dogs of the company could make for an excellent introduction storyline and the in-ring collision between these two men has potential to bring out very different sides to both Rhodes and Ambrose that we haven’t seen before.

Adam/Hangman Page

Adam Page is a name who over the past year I have really enjoyed watching despite not talking about him much here on my blog. The young star has been making a major impact across the independent wrestling circuit and had yet another amazing showing last year at the All-In event. When making up my list today of wrestlers I want to see Dean Ambrose potentially collide with outside of the WWE it was Page who came up very quickly. Looking at the list I have created I believe this could be the bout that goes down as the best of them all that I have mentioned today with the pair sure to massively complement each other’s in-ring styles. Page could not only bring out the best of Ambrose’s in-ring abilities but a match against the former WWE Champion with enough time in the ring could result in Page turning heads even more than he already has done.

Tommy Dreamer

I know I have spent a lot of today’s blog post talking about Ambrose’s hardcore wrestling past and I know that he doesn’t get enough credit for just how good of a technical wrestler he is but when forming this list it was the hardcore side of him I couldn’t stop thinking about potentially because we didn’t see the WWE scratch the surface of what he could do in that area. A name that pops up whenever the words Hardcore Wrestling is uttered is, of course, Tommy Dreamer and with the former ECW champion recently creating some special in-ring work with IMPACT Star Eddie Edwards, I’m left desperate to see a collision between Dreamer and Ambrose. Now, there may not be much originality here in terms of story work but none the less there is a real feeling of passing the torch within this scenario and when booked right this could be a career standout rivalry for Ambrose and one that changes his career immensely.

Jimmy Havoc

Topping my list in terms of dream opponents for Ambrose outside of the WWE is, of course, Jimmy Havoc. With the British star already making it clear he wants to step in the ring with the lunatic fringe upon the news of his departure wrestling fans are buzzing for what could be one truly epic collision between two stars who have shined brightly in the world of hardcore wrestling. With both men owning such intense character, amazing charisma, experience, and skill within the hardcore scene of pro wrestling this has always been a dream match up! I’ve spoken about the idea of these two colliding in previous blog posts but with Ambrose now set to leave the WWE the chances of this match happening is so much stronger! Outside of the WWE, these two have the chance of delivering something insanely barbaric that has potential to put hardcore wrestling in a position it hasn’t been in for a very long time! Not to mention the belief that Havoc could bring out the best character and in-ring work from Ambrose in a very long time!

And those are just six of many potential and dream opponents for Dean Ambrose once he leaves the WWE. There are of course many other names I could have mentioned today but I want to know who you would have included in this list so feel free to leave a comment below or tweet me over at @TezangiVictoria.
